Default Winter Tire Recommendations?

Hi Guys-

I have a 2019 Carrera base with manual transmission and 20" S wheels with the OEM summer tires. It is not a daily driver and will NOT be driven in snow or ice. I would like to be able to use the car in decent but sub 35 temperatures we get around here. Any recommendations on what tires to get and where to get them?

Thanks

Bob

From everything I have read, and it has been lots LOL, for your needs I would suggest the Michelin PA's. You cannot go wrong with Michelins, and if you dont need a snow and ice tire, then this seems to be the choice.

I love my Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4 winter tires. Just popped them on for my 4th winter. They work great in the cold...and also in light snow.

If you have an 11.5" rear wheel you cannot use 295's on it. The 305 width rear snow tire is like $500 per rear tire. (Fronts are obviously cheaper)

You can also do a set of performance all season if you plan to never use it in snow and ice. Potenza RE980AS could work.

I'm running 295 Alpin winters in the back without any issues.

I just put a set of Pirelli Sotto Zero performance winters on my 991.2 C2S MT, 11.5” rears... the 295 tire works fine, though of course I would prefer a 305 if it was available.

Btw, I happen to think the pirelli sotto zero tires feel and sound very nice on a nice-weather, fall drive. Will be interesting to see how they perform in messy conditions.

Summer Pirellis are off, and 19" Continentals are on. I've heard the PA's are better, but I really like the Contis so far. The 19"s ride better and seem quieter as well. They also don't toss gravel around nearly as much as the summer rubber, which is nice.

I don't have winter tires for the Targa, but had Michelin Pilot Alpins on my 2011 C4S as well as on my 1999 Boxster prior to that and was very happy driving in the winter and in the snow. Recommended!

Here is a quick video of the surefooted 4CS with the Michelin Pilot Alpins on a winter morning

You are really not supposed to run a 295 with the 11.5" rear wheel. (from Michelin's website) Even Tire Rack warns about this....

I have the pirelli sotto zeros on mine. They handle great and 0 issues. I have the 295s on rear with the 12” wide centerlock wheels. There is a little bit of lip on wheel showing. Other than the exposed lip there is no issue running them even on a 12” wide wheel. I think I have hit around 1.3gs in lat acceleration with them. True winter performance tire. Go to Tirerack website

Nope it was 1.19gs which is great in my opinion for a winter tire.

No snow or ice, RE980AS are the ticket. Sub freezing no issues.

Although I hate p zero, pirelli make a couple really good tires for cold. Based on your driving requirements I would either go all season or pirelli winters. The sottozero 2 have really good handling feel and are much sharper on dry cold roads than the alpins. Alpins have huge tread blocks and feel squishy to me, and they break loose to easily in the dry in my opinion. Steering communication was gone so I swapped them for the pirelli. Im sure most folks will disagree and for legitimate snow the alpins would completely outperform the sottozero. However they noticecably made the car less sharp immediately.
For suv the pirelli scorpion ZERO all season plus are THE tire for the macan. The rears are heavy but from a traction standpoint these are unbeatable all around tires including heavy snow. It will dead hook on launch mode at 40F also.
