My question is do aftermarket coil-overs actually improve over Porsche SPASM? Porsche designs pretty damn high performance cars.

I just need to decide what I want, be it spring or full coil-over. The only thing I don't think I want is to have to delete PASM but don't want a Pogo type feeling on the OEM struts with progressive aftermarket springs..... OH, that 1st world problems and dilemma...
I had same feelings as you, ended up with (used) Bilstein B16 Damptronics. Before that presented itself as an option I was going to do the KW HAS system. While I am glad I got the coils, my understanding is the OEM shocks (Bilstein) are pretty decent. The B16 front dampers are inverted, higher spring rates, firmer damping etc.

Spring Rates (F/R)
  • PASM-S/GTS: 33nm/108nm
  • KW HAS: 44nm/100nm
  • GT3: 45nm/120nm
  • Bilstein B16 Damptronic coilovers: 50nm/110nm
  • 991.2 GT3 RS: 100nm/160nm

What are people's opinions between the Billstein Damptroics compared to the Ohlins R&T, I'm still now really fond of the idea of PSAM delete though.

My car has PDCC so Ohlins were not an option, BUT both me and Adam have B16's with the DSC, and I LOVE it. Also I paid around $1,000 for labor, alignment, height adjustments and installing the FF Transmission mount. That's here in the SF Bay Area where labor is more than most other areas.

But I think for just installs on suspension $500-800 is about the norm. Also doing just springs is not much different if any than doing a full coilover from a labor perspective.

Coil overs are better for adjustability especially if you spent time at the track. However, springs are a great lower cost option that greatly improves aesthetics while maintaining stock-like ride. You can read and choose between H&R or TechArts. I've had both and they have their strengths and weaknesses If you are not comfortable than just keep it stock. Many on this forum are mod-junkies and can always find something to tweek ,others not so much.

Exhaust and springs are always the first thing I do to all my 911's.

I have PDCC as well, so I guess Ohlins is out of it then...Does the FF TM really do much, noticeable seat of the pants? Which one did you opt for Yellow, Orange or black? Which shop did your work for you?

I paid $500-600 excluding alignment ($140) over at Sterlin Auto Con (Chris Sterling) - who is an amazing specialist in Porsche. He's a true enthusiast of the work.

1200 at dealer for springs. Coil-overs would probably be the way to go as it can sort of pogo under certain circumstances. but it looks GREAT.

I wish the dealership where I bought my 991 would but they said they don't install anything aftermarket.

Believe it or not the Ohlins actually work with PDCC. The PDCC brackets bolt onto the Ohlins shock body. I was surprised. PASM delete was a no go for me though.

Hi Adam, I saw that as well a couple days ago as i was researching Olins. So I guess if I go full coil-over the note below won't matter or be required then?

1 Note! If the vehicle is equipped with OEM PASM shock absorbers, use Öhlins cancellation kit

Are you planning to track the car or just want it to look lower/better?
I'd agree with the comment that these cars are good out of the box and have tracked mine a couple times to make sure

My PASM/PDCC PDK feels fine on the bad pavement roads here in Seattle, yours are similar/worse and I'm tempted to try the DSC V3 to see how I like it.
Can always sell to one of you guys for a discount I'd guess.

I promised myself I wouldn't mess with this car and keep it cheap to own...

You should step up to the plate and get the cheap(lol) Tractive DDA RTs and do it right!

If you go Bilstein you keep PASM (electric dampers), if you go Ohlins you have to delete PASM. Both Ohlins and Bilstein work with PDCC (electronic/hydraulic sway bars) if equipped. With Bilstein you need to buy a $250 PDCC adapter kit in addition to the coilovers if you have PDCC like Joe and I.
