New Michelin Pilot 4S tires - steering wheel shaking

Dealer rebalanced the tires by doing road force balancing - definitely improved the ride (still new to Michelins PS4s, so getting used to the difference in the ride from P0s). Dealer arranged for the rim nick to be fixed. So good progress. Thanks for all you inputs.

That’s a good news to hear from you. Very happy they took responsibility. Next time you should inspect before leaving the dealership cuz this could have been a nightmare to deal with.

Did they not do roadforce initially ?

Had a local Porsche dealer install four new Pilot 4S tires on 2018 4S with ~14K miles on Friday. Prior, Pirelli P-Zero tires, great ride, well balanced, no issues. After instal, and after about 100 miles for the break in, still constant vibration in the steering wheel, not fun to drive. Taking the car back to dealer tomorrow. Wonder if any of you have had any issues installing new Michelins and if you have any insight into what could cause this? Also to mention, found a big nick in the wheel (pic) after install - so wonder if the dealer had any idea what they were doing...
Thanks in advance

Yes, it is. I wanted to let others know that I've had the same issue with Michelin tires for years! They are unfortunately marked well, but after 20 years, stupid me, I finally realized that they are not made for high-speed or performance driving.

I had this issue 6 months ago, PS4s N0, Michelin swapped for new set of 4 tires for free. It was minimally better but still shaky after 80mph. Can't wait to swap back to Pirelli Pzeros, even though the grip of Michelin is slightly better

You're exactly right—same here! Michelin has relatively good wet weather performance, but just as you've experienced this, I've had the same shaking—I've taken it back for dynamic rebalancing and standard balancing, which made no difference. I've had the shaking start right after 75/80 miles per hour. Now I know why the other tires cost a bit more and why BMW/Porsche/Audi, and others use the other brands. Michelin tires appear to be manufactured and optimized for manufacturing cost reductions and do not offer the same performance level and reliability at higher speeds. I mentioned this above, but I've experienced this issue since the mid-2000s with my BMW 330CI, then my 550i, and later with my 640i. I won't be going back to Michelin when I'm due for new tires with my 8-series.

Rebalancing has not worked for me. I've seen this happen with new tires within the first week, and it did not subside with rebalancing. Mind you, I did not have this with the Continentals, which were the OEM tires on my BMWs, even when they were worn and needed replacements. When Costco placed on the Michelin Pilot Sport PS3/PS4 or whatever they were (I picked the "best" ones) - the shaking/vibration was present more or less at or near 80 mph and above WITHIN the first month. Michelin is well marketed but appears to be cost-optimized for people who just drive (meaning from point A to B), not drivers who push their cars and enjoy performance driving.

when I bought my car it had yokohama advan sport v105 n-spec tires put on by the dealer as part of CPO. they have been smooth as glass to over 100 mph, don't have anywhere around here to go faster. road noise is there, but any 35 or 40 aspect ratio tire will give you that. they aren't cheap but I will be going this route when they need replacing. hoping that v107 is available for these sizes by then, if not then v105. any summer performance michelin's that I put on my acura gave me no issues, bought at costco and got 80k km per set.

Sorry guys, I've had Michelin 4s tires on four different vehicles over several years and have encountered zero vibration problems. Installers were Porsche dealer, Volvo dealer and two independent shops. I'm very happy with Michelin.

Don’t know what to say. I’ve had a set of P4S on my 991 for almost 7 years and over 23k miles. They are ready to be replaced (I’ve been waiting for the P5S to come out) but every mile with those tires has been smooth and vibration-free. I think there must be an issue with the affected tires or cars. I’ve owned 4 sets of these tires on different cars and they have all been great for my spirited street use. I’m sure there are far better options for those that track, drift, etc.
I bought another car recently that came with a brand new set of PZeros and I am reminded of how awful those tires are - harsh impacts, ridiculous road noise, and no perceivable benefit over the P4S.
