Default Windshield replace/repair hurt value ?

I just found a tiny chip in my windshield. Do windshield replacements show on Carfax and do they hurt resale/trade-in value ?

It’s small, on lower pax side and might be fillable to avoid the replacement hassle and risk of wind noise issues (I’m hopeful insurance will cover either option).

I remember visiting the factory in Zuffenhausen and saw that the ONLY robot on the assembly line beyond paint/body shop was the windshield installer. I’m presuming a guy in a van doesn’t do it as accurately.

Thanks in advance
Scott

Just use OEM glass and you are fine. Should not hit Carfax if not a part of an accident, which this does not sound like.

Post picture of damage.

My thoughts is just fix it before it spreads. Call insurance co....... most fix chips for free.

I had one fixed almost 5 years ago and still looks good.

Not due to accident - thought it was a dead bug until got out of car and ran finger across it. Photo to follow later today...

It sounds pretty small (you said "tiny"). Don't worry about it. You'll get more soon.

If you plan to repair it, if even large enough, cover it immediately with a piece of tape. The cleaner and dryer you keep it now greatly effects the repair quality later.

I would just have a company, like Safelite, repair the chip.

Replacing a windshield though should not affect resale unless this was a collector car, many years from now and everything else was original.

Just get the chipped fixed for free if its a star. If its tiny and not a star, its normal and you'll get more assuming you drive the car. Like you said, they blend in with dirt and bugs so don't worry about it.

Guarantee if you look close enough, you'll find dozens of em of varying depth. Eventually you get enough you stop caring.

Main thing is to not drive too close to trucks that can throw large stones that crack the glass requiring replacement... no that wont impact value and no one would ever know, however after having windshield replaced in the past cars, its never as good as factory and I personally would rather have a few dings / factory install than a replacement (often quickly slapped on in less than 1 hr due to how the business works). Think of it this way..

- replacement has same chance to get dinged
- now that its dinged and you could get a replacement if you wanted, why not just use it as excuse to not be bothered by more dings
- replacement wont be as good as original factory install (and the glass itself might be more wavy)

As one posted above, for a star repair you want to tape it ASAP because the fix is to inject resin...if its dirty/wet it wont cure/seal as well (cosmetically).

All of the damage other than that 1/16th” white round spot is below the surface of the windshield (I.e. it’s smooth other than the white dot). It’s about 8 inches up from the bottom and mid-passenger side.

My preference is to repair it - especially since I don’t have much to lose by trying that route first.

I just replaced my third windshield on my 981 yesterday. (49k miles) and one on my 991.2 earlier this year (19k miles).

The first replacement on my 981, I used a Porsche dealership with an OEM windshield. It cost me $1350. They told me they just farmed out the work to a third party vendor (i.e. probably safelite). This was a large premier dealership in PA. They don't replace windshields on site with their employees. I have used safelite non OEM windshields for my subsequent replacements. It's quick, half the cost and no one knows the difference. They also come to your house and do it for you. I just left the car out front in the driveway while I was at work. $550.

It's not reported to carfax. No one can tell the difference and you will get another chip anyway if you drive it enough. These cars are low to the ground and susceptible to chips. If you intend to get the chip fixed instead of a full replacement, get it done quickly, otherwise a crack will propogate with temperature changes and vibration.

Did they have to do any calibration to the camera that is at the top center of the windshield?

Don't ask me why I ask... ARGH!!!

I had a half moon chip like that on my passenger side too. SafeLite repaired it at my house and I can barely see it anymore. Try the repair first.

There is no camera in the windshield of my 981. What system requires that camera? PDLS plus?

There is a rain sensor that activates the wipers which is part of a stationary fitting behind and not part of the windshield. Not sure if it is an option or standard. I have it on my Macan and it was not affected when replacing the windshield after a chip like that decided to spread a crack months after a Safelight repair. Or, if something was reset, the dealer never mentioned it or charged me to do it.

SAFELIGHT repair in Austin area, using a Carrera 4/2 OEM windshield shipped direct from the D. Was about a week long wait for it to arrive. USD 770, installed. Ask me how I know... This might be a USAA price, however, not sure. Excellent install, 90 minutes work. I opted to go to their store, as the master installer felt more comfy doing the work there vice my house. Worth it.

Before/During: took the strike right below the tag and it was over 8 inches immediately, spread to over a foot over the course of the rest of the drive.

After: Just like the night I drove her home.
