Default 991.1 poor key fob range after windshield replacement

Hi,

My first post here.

I recently had the windshield replaced on a 2015 911 991.1 C4S. Afterwards, I noticed that the key fob has lost allot of range. I have to be standing by the driver side mirror or at the front of the car in order to be able to lock/unlock the car. I've replaced the battery in the fob twice just in case.

Is there any relationship between the windshield and the FOB receiver/antenna? If so, any suggestions on where to start the troubleshooting process?

Thanks in advance.

I don't believe so, and don't mean this to be coy, but have you changed the battery in the remote?

Changed the battery twice just to be sure.

Every now and again I find my fob to be a bit sketchy, requiring multiple attempts to activate. Then the next day it's fine again. I wonder if it's something to do with the way they continually scramble codes? Let us know what you learn.

One of my remotes is buggy like this. When I bring it up at the dealer my SA changes the battery for a new one on the spot, it works and I look dumb.. When I get home, same problem arises.

Wish I could help.

Sounds odd.

Can you get better range if you hold the fob up to your jaw? (Your jawbone will act like an antenna of sorts.)

if that helps, it suggests the issue is in your fob.

Elaborate now.

Key fob next to the jawbone creates a coriolis effect caused by bipolarity in the brain. Seriously though, OP's issue might be the key fob. After 5,000 miles, I had to replace my windshield thanks to a supersonic rock and I haven't had any issues.

Was the replacement windshield OEM?
I don’t know what the relationship to your key fob might be (if any), but when I had a MB, the non-OEM windshield would not work with the intermittent wiper function.
Had to be replaced with a OEM (at no cost to me) and it worked fine afterwards.

There is no relationship between your fob (key) and the windshield. Basically there are two types of windshields, with camera and without camera (refer to pic.)

My understanding there are four antennas used for the fob (keyless entry) where two are referenced inner and two are referenced outer. Refer to part # 16 for inner and part # 20 for outer. The outer antenna at the driver’s side is located just under the wheel liner.

Outer Antenna / Driver Side

In my case, I can come home from a road trip to the parking garage and forget, exactly, where my car is. If I hold my fob up to my jaw, I can easily "click" my car from several rows away. Held at my side, the fob is not nearly as strong. I've done this many times over the years to conclude empirically that it works. At least for me, and quite well.

I'm not exactly in the Antenna business anymore but I did work on a few uh RF systems in my early days in Aerospace Engineering for a certain erm Government Lab.

He was only partially correct: he forgot to mention that you also have to lift your left foot, face west and sing "Take me to the River".

Thank you for this Sidvicious7. This is very helpful.

May I ask what site you are using for the parts diagrams?
