Default Engine hood cable popped off 991.1

Be aware when changing your own oil on your 991.1. After completing my last oil change, I noticed that my engine hood was not opening due to a cable that has popped off. I checked all the forums, saw all the videos which explained how to open the engine hood when this occurs. I have an aero kit on my 991.1 which makes it a harder to open than the standard 991's that can raise the back spoiler. In the end, I had to pay a dealer to open the engine hood. The mechanic showed me what he does each time he changes the oil in order to eliminate that failure. I thought I would share it with everyone that changes there own oil. With the lid open, push the silver lever down inside the lock mechanism with a screwdriver or a flat tool until it locks. Then try opening it with the engine hood button as normal. If it fails then take off the fans and cover to reassemble the cable into the locking mechanism. If the latch pops up then you are good to go with dropping your lid to close the engine hood. If you get into this habit each time you do an oil change you won't be caught with your Hood down!

Push lever down inside red circle.

This happened to me. I found a video where a guy raised the rear spoiler and used a mirror and long hook to undo the latch manually. I used a borescope and coat hanger, worked perfectly after a few attempts. I don't know how the guy did it with just a mirror.. the camera on an ipad was a lifesaver.

The manual cable release for the latch lid is under the cover cap on the right side, where is says Mobile Oil. I am thinking of just removing the cap and not replacing it, which will give you access to the cable release when you need it by just raising the spoiler.

If you have a retractable rear wing the videos as you say are a great help. It's a different story with the aero kit which has a fixed rear wing. The dealership had Porsche Germany send them a video on how to access the locking mechanism by removing the ring inside the flexible intake, then squeezing and pulling the flexible intake through the slits of the engine hood cover to view the locking mechanism.

With this design, if the cable pops off the mechanism, the manual cable release will not open the engine hood. The manual cable release comes in handy when your lock mechanism fails. The cable is more prone to pop off. Most models have a latch that stops the cable from dislodging from the mechanism which isn't fool proof. Some of the earlier model 991 don't have a latch.
