No quality tire is that fragile unless it was defective, overinflated, or the impact was much greater than described. "Gently" touching a curb is exponentially less abusive than hitting moderate bumps on roads at normal driving speeds. I saw a lady yesterday drive over a parking lot curb at around 10 mph (apparently she never saw it) and her RAV4 bounced over it quite harshly. I could see that doing damage to a tire but not what was described. Something's amiss.
