Default Fault codes after changing spark plugs 😞

Hi all,

I changed my spark plugs 2 days ago. It would have a simple project if it wasn’t for the rubber pieces that are attached to each ignition coil. 5 out of 6 of those rubber pieces were stuck inside the tunnel where spark plugs are. I guess they kind of glued to the metal result of heat....it took me 3 hours to remove all rubber pieces!!

After done I took a test drive for 5 minutes, and there were no issues. But this morning, the car had a rough idle and immediately the following yellow codes appeared:

Fault engine control, Possible to drive
Start/stop operation deactivated
PSM loss, possible to drive on carefully

Car is 2014 991.1 3.4.
Anyone has any idea what might have caused the issue? Do I need to change the ignition coils?

Your help is appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Edit: I removed the O2 sensors on each side to gain easy access to the last spark plug. Then, I attached it back. Would it cause the issue???

What did the OBD2 scanner say when you pulled the code?

Advance Auto might pull the code for free. I got a decent scanner from Harbor Freight for around $50. Paid for itself a few times already. Also some cool Bluetooth App based scanners too.

I have this one
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B073XKQQQW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B073XKQQQW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And this one
https://www.harborfreight.com/zr4-ob...der-63808.html

Something tells me you are going to see a misfire code on one of the cylinders due to a poorly seated coil or something....

Since you had a difficult time removing the ignition coils and spent 3 hours doing so there is a strong chance this will reoccur again. I for one would have replaced all six ignition coils. Here is the part number Part # 9A1-602-104-07. I also included a link for a vendor that has the lowest price around for OEM parts. This may not solve your problem but based on your experience removing the current coils it’s a good insurance policy to start with new parts.

Thanks for your input!

the coils came out easily but the soft rubber piece attached to the tip of the coil remained in the tunnel when I pulled the coil out. It is definitely a design error.

I will I’ll remove all of the coils and spark plugs, clean and reinstall them. If it doesn’t solve the issue, I will replace the coils as you suggested.
Regards

Doesn’t sound like a coil problem from the errors generated, but the rough idle could be. (Or a plug gap problem)

need the scan errors to tell

My guess is that it is the O2 sensor. Coils fail due to weak spark plugs not new ones. This assumes that the correct plugs were used.

I sprayed WD-40, then used needle nose pliers. But instead of pulling them out, I kept twisting them left to right, right to left. Eventually they gave up and got lose. But I damaged one of the rubber pieces when I was trying to pull out! It will take time but they eventually come out. Be penitent. The worst case you can buy new set of coils (~$240). You would still save tons of money compared to what dealer charges.
I hope this helps

I visually inspected them and didn't see anything unusual. These are the plugs I used:

Thanks for your input!

Do you think that O2 sensors can go bad after simple uninstall/install?

These are the saprk plugs I used:

I've seen the wire leads coming out of the sensor get stretched while spinning it, and ruin a sensor...

Just pull the code, should be pretty clear what the problem is.
