Targa wind deflector - up or down?

Targa wind deflector - up or down?
This has probably been covered somewhere, but I thought I'd make it a specific topic. The black plastic wind deflector thingy on the Targa - when do you leave it in the "up" position and when do you leave it in the "down" position? Seems with it in the "up" position, there is more buffeting. So why would you have it up? Anyway, I figure someone knows the answer and it might be helpful for those similarly clueless...

Down!
And while we are talking about the wind deflector...I had to get mine replaced due to a rattle, and now it "toggles" every time I raise or lower the top. If anyone knows how to fix that I'd be really appreciative.

This is one of the first things I noticed when I took delivery of my car a few weeks ago. With the top open, my deflector didn’t move (stuck in the down position) and I had buffeting at slower speeds. I then learned (Thx to RL) that this was adjustable. After fiddling with the deflector, it now goes to the up position when the top is opened but I don’t think I’ve put it in the down position before closing then reopening the top to see if it remains down. Although I haven’t had enough seat time yet (rainy cool weather has been relentless) but it appears the deflector is better in the down position at highway speed and up at slower speeds (for me).

I generally leave mine down all the time.
That said, on a really cold day where my wife is whining and I roll the windows up when the top is down, I have noticed that having the deflector up seems to work to keep the least amount of cold air entering the cockpit thus keeping the whining to a minimum. ;-)

This article from back at original launch time seems to think having it up at lower speeds is the intent....as Stevelev said he has found.

"There is a pop-up wind deflector bar on the windshield header, which Porsche claims reduces buffeting between 60 and 90 kph (37 – 58 mph)".

From the owner's manual, deflector up for lower speeds, and down at higher speeds.

Mine is stuck in the “down” position. I’m good with it.

Toggles. You know how you press it down and it goes to the up position, press it again and it goes to the down position?
The act of lowering the top causes this also. So if the deflector is in the up position and I close the top, next time I open it will be down. And vice versa.
It didn't toggle like this before I had it replaced. This issue beats the rattle I had from the original though!

We drive with the windows up when the top is down and the deflector is up as well, which seems to provide less buffeting but more wind noise, and with it down the opposite, but not that much of difference either way. I have a hard time getting mine to stay down if moving, no matter where I press - any tricks? More importantly, ones seat position matters more for buffeting - the further back the seat the more buffeting, and the higher the seat as well.
By the way, I just installed the AWE Diffusers so maybe it will allow more window down motoring.

I’m interested to hear how this goes. I installed the AWE Diffusers on my 981 and although it helps, I find its best to keep a couple inches of the windows sticking up out of the door for the least amount of wind noise. Perhaps the more expensive, less OEM looking competitors product is better ?

There is another active thread for that topic: https://rennlist.com/forums/991/1101...deflector.html
