It’s no 996, no need to get the engine replaced ...

I've had this issue, back on 22k miles 3yrs ago the engine started ticking, at the time car was still under warranty, the sound coming from it is just like what OP describes, ticking on idle and speeds up when you rev, and doesn't go away when the engine is on operating temp.
turns out its the valve lifters (didn't exactly knew which one, still learning & forgot to ask ).
currently running 35k miles and stronger than ever

Update: Dealership had the car for approximately two months (May and June of 2019) and finally discovered a broken valve spring. After the third engine tear down, they replaced the spring and the ticking sound is gone. Car is running strong.

However, a new tick has developed (or at least I am just now noticing it). It’s a morse code or static-like intermittent ticking which sounds identical to this 991 GT3:

Also, I just changed the oil today and the filter had a very very small amount of tiny tiny metal particles. Hoping this is normal, but will have the filter looked at by a local shop. Still
putting in Mobile 1 0W-40 for now.

Any thoughts or input welcome. Thanks.

My 2013 C2 developed a ticking noise over the summer. It mostly comes from the passenger rear side. I first noticed it when I was in 2nd or 3rd gear with foot off the pedal slowing down for traffic lights. Pretty embarrassing. When I tap gas a little, the sound goes away. Here's a clip when the car is warm and at idle. 10600 mi on the clock right now. Will go in for oil change in few weeks. Still under CPO. Will see what the dealer says.

My 2013 C2 sounds exactly the same. Please share what you learn after your trip to the dealer. My CPO expires in December, so I may take it in myself as well.

You’ll soon hear “that’s normal”... It’s all unicorns, and rainbows. Enjoy the drive, and don’t worry!

I'm not willing to make an opinion until you see what the dealer says. Nothing good comes from my interjections until you have the script read to you.

The cylinder bore scoring may be from leaky fuel injectors that contaminated the oil. There are ten photos of scoring; how many of these photos are of the same cylinder?

It's rare, in my opinion, to contaminate all six cylinders with leaky fuel injectors so something else is going on if all six cylinders are scored.

Fuel is a great solvent. It is the major contributing factor to cylinder deficiencies in every car on the road today.
An engine can be perfectly healthy, and fuel will kill it. Very few of us have connected these dots.

Are you guys kidding? Do you think you’re driving a Tesla or a Porsche? Have you heard AMG engines? They sound like ****! Of course you’re going to hear noises, injectors, lifters, valves, pistons, the engine is moving and it’s a flat 6. These direct injection engines are LOUD! Just enjoy the car. They all sound like that. Or install an exhaust so you cancel out that noise. 👍

I had same ticking that wouldn't go away when warmed up. Faint at first and after a couple thousand miles grew stronger. All started at about 18K miles.

Dealer first brushed it off. Then it started consuming oil. They replaced the injector pump. Doesn't make sense to me because not related to oil consumption. It made no difference.

By 22K miles it was consuming oil at a rate of 8qts per 10K miles! Dealer said this was in normal range ?!?!

I finally convinced them to pull the plugs and borescope. One plug came out dripping oil and the others clean. That cylinder had severe bore scoring. Root cause identified!

I got a new engine under CPO and it is running strong and not burning a drop after another 23K miles.

Just had this happen for the first time today, 18’ GTS. 9.7K miles on the clock, on startup until engine got warmed up past ~170 deg at which point it went and stayed away. Car ran strong like always. Oil level normal, changed less than 2K ago. I get the impression this is an occasional “normal” for a lifter that oil has drained out of. But why now, and is it a harbinger of future problems? Car has sat over winter and sits routinely several weeks at a time since new and has not made this noise before on start up 🤷‍♂️
