S models - white tach?

None with white. Grey standard. Black no cost option. Full color gauges beyond that.

^above is correct, but, White gauges were also an available option on the 991. As that's what I have.
I think some of the other available colors were; yellow and red.

Seem to recollect that in the early noughties I bought a base 987 Boxster with white dials as standard and then an S with black as standard. Not the other way round so presumably black then considered an upgrade. Now you buy either with black as standard and pay quite a silly upgrade price to get white. My 991.2S has white at a cost of over £700, so over $1000. Much better than black but I wouldn't spec if I bought from new.

Many people here are confusing white with silver. Many Porsches offered the silver gauges with the S model. True white gauges have always been an option only color.

The standard grey tack in the S tends to wash out in daylight. Most people tend to opt for the free black dial conversion. I have the white dials in my 991.2 and simply love them.

Yep, you're right about confusing silver with white. Still think the base had silver and the S was black with the 987 in 2006 but could be dementia.

Yep, you're right again. Just checked online photos of various for sale on Autotrader. Sorry for the time wasting.
Looks like the same for 986's, at least the later ones, but the early ones look like they were black in both the base and S.
Guess I should now check the history of dial colours in the various 911 generations as this is after all a 911 forum. But maybe enough is enough.
