Default First track day in 13+ years coming up

Also, first time in a 911.

Do you guys have any words of wisdom and/or any car prep suggestions?

Admittedly, I am a bit intimidated by the 911 as compared to my prior experience with a M3

Should I slap an ///M badge on the 911?

The 911 will inspire more confidence than any sport sedan. I don’t know what model you are tracking but in my GTS I find that I can brake harder coming into a turn than in any other car I drive and with RAS I can get on power earlier out of the turn. It took some track time to find the right balance but even coming in too hot the car would instill a sense of “I got this”. A 911 is really at home on a track and I’m no track pro but I am not hesitant about driving the car more aggressively than anything else I have driven on a track and the car just responds.

Track prep... the only thing I do when I arrive at the track is drop my air pressure down and adjust after the first session based on what I am feeling.

PS- I’ll share one of the more embarrassing details of an early track experience in my GTS. I wasn’t paying attention to fuel and with the standard fuel tank the car can burn through the tank in just a couple of sessions. I found myself exiting the track early in an afternoon session because my fuel light came on. Lesson, fuel up often.

Just remember to keep your eyes up. When I haven't been to the track in a while, I find myself not looking far enough ahead sometimes. What condition are your brake pads, fluid, and tires in?

Depends on a lot of factors but with cooler temperatures prevailing, I’d start with 31/34 and see how it feels. The tires you run are also an important factor before going with a number for the sake of a number. I’m running Michelin Pilot Sports, N-spec, and on my P-Zeroes I found that they responded better with a few less lbs of pressure as my starting point.

It’s total gut feel, but my sense is that the P-Zeroes perform best at a higher temperature than the Michelins.

Goals I use and agree on with the left side person as I hope into the right side.
1.) Have Fun
2.) Keep the shiny side up
3.) Go home with car in similar condition you arrived

Which M3? Either way you're not far off.

Suggestions:
Torque your wheels
Check your brakes and tires (wear and pressures)
If you don't feel well, start to get uneasy or you have doubts about your car, pit out.

On Sport Cup 2's I run 33-35psi hot.
First time out in a while, drop 3-4psi, check pressures right after you get off of 1st session and see where your pressures are. You'll see seasoned folks go below 30psi, I would stay above that as I don't think you'll be heating your tires up as much as others.

In general good advice. I see folks that start the day with whatever they showed up with. 38PSI or so and the tires heats up to over 50psi. No beuno.

Here's my review of my first track day with my 911 GTS. Also coming from an M3.
https://rennlist.com/forums/racing-a...6-911-gts.html

My second track weekend was two days at Sebring where I flushed the brake fluid with Motul 600. Zero brake fade and stock pads/rotors. The P-Zeros like 36-38 HOT. You don't want to bleed the tires down too low when cold or it will trigger the tire pressure monitors and if you drive hard on the low pressure you will ruin the outside tire edges. Just pit after 1-2 warm up laps to bleed them down.

I shoot for 35 hot all around on my 991.1 GTS, which is about 27-28 cold.

Tracking a porsche was new to me, but have I’ve raced BMW’s for years. As it turns out, the 991 is a total pussycat on the track. No bad behaviors, wonderfully balanced, easy to put the power down. My M4 street car was WAY more of a handful on the track than the 991. Stock pads and rotors were plenty good enough. Only complaint was the soft street oriented manual and clutch. Have fun!

Same boat as you but 7 yrs, not 13... I got burned out getting up at 4AM most week ends to get there for tech and not even drive till 10AM... And my region was a full on escalation war of GT3/RS and in a base car in the fast group, I was always driving my mirrors... Got old... Ironically I enjoyed it more in the old days in my slow 911SC dicing with 944s... Good on you for getting back into it, 31-34 sounds good, full tank of gas, fresh brake fuild, off you go ! I am done getting up that early, I'm going Go-karting instead ;-)

i assume you'll be working/driving with an instructor? But, ask him/her about this. In general, they don't want you turing off things like PSM (Porsche Stability Management) during novice track days.
