While I completely understand and accept that a Cabriolet is going to rattle more than a coupe, I still always challenge myself to find the source to reduce or eliminate some of the noise. In particular, I had a loud rattle in the rear passenger side. Only noticeable when driving over bumps or around corners, but easily reproducible. Explored the area with the top half way down and discovered a very loose bracket that holds tension on the cable to the top. The star screw was extremely loose, taking several turns to tighten. Looked at the other side, and the bracket was also a bit loose. Have not had a chance to test drive yet, but wanted to share this find and show the video and pics of the repair. Anyone else experience this problem? Very easy fix as the bracket is easy to access under the rear liner.
Thank you David! I have cab rattles that come and go. It can be a bit of a black box back there, hoping and wishing to find the source of a rattle that comes and goes. I will definitely check this out in my car.
Hmm very interesting. I had my dealer address this issue with a rattle from the right rear and they told me something was loose and they tightened it up. It seemed to work for a brief period and has been back for quite a while now. Now that I am driving with the top up all the time it is driving me nuts. Before another visit to the dealer I think it is time to investigate on my own. Perhaps with a couple of drops of loctite this time. I will report back...
Okay I just checked mine out. Left side quite loose. Right side not as loose, but definitely not tight. Could move it around a bit. I tightened both up including blue loctite on the threads. Won't be able to drive for a couple of days due to a business trip. But will report back. Thanks so much for the tip. I am optimistic that this will address the rattle, and probably some of the creaks from the top itself.
Just took the Cab for a test drive. The rattle noise is gone over big bumps, but still had some chirping fabric/plastic noises. Seems that the soft top makes noise rubbing over the hard panels. Just sprayed silicone on all the joints, and generous amounts of dash treatment spray on top of the hard panels. Went for another drive, and completely silent from the top. We will see how this holds up, but very easy to spray the top as needed.
Similar problem with my pre-owned 2014 991 cab...I will get inside there and report back...we also have a 2016 Macan S; comparing the build quality of the Macan vs the build quality of the 991 cab is like two different car companies, the Macan S is a far superior build of the 991...I have had 5-6 different annoying problems with the 991 (comparing door seam allowance on both sides, leather quality, seat separation tolerance, back seat not plumb, when putting the top up the power windows go up sometimes and sometimes not going up and having to play with the switch - small simple but annoying things like this...especially out of warranty! However, the good outweigh the not so good!
I had a rattle that made me nuts. Finally traced it to the tension rod on the passenger side where it comes to the front edge of the windshield frame. It was very tricky to tighten up and require three efforts to finally silence it. Lots going on with those tops, rattle chasing is half the fun!
I tightened the screw holding cable it was loose . The rattle/vibration sound is still there. It is evident when driving roads that are not smooth pavement bumps don’t really seem to be the issue just vibration from passenger side back seat up high in the corner
The rattling drive me insane in my former 991.1. Weirdly it was louder when it was cold and when the car was cold. My current 991.2 has no rattling but I miss the NA engine of the 991.1… can’t have it all

Colder weather rattling is a known phenomenon as some parts contract in the cold and expand when it gets warmer.
