Changing the hood crest
#16
I understand the new nuts if the soft rubber-backing on them came apart like it did on the ones for my 997. You could reuse them anyway, but I'd assume they added the cushioning for a reason...for either vibration damping or to prevent paint scratching on the understand of the hood perhaps? It's a minor cost in the scale of the project.
I also got a badge from the same guy (aka intrepidAgent). The finish on the badge (same as OP's I think) was nice and held up really well, but on mine one of the mounting pins was misaligned and wouldn't quite fit into the factory openings. Fortunately I was able to unsolder and realign it myself since I had the right tools so it wasn't too big a deal, but yeah, sometimes his quality does have issues. Overall most seem quite happy with the product. I've opted not to do it again on my newer cars, but I also decided to try to stay mod-free in general this time around .

It seems that the rubber may help keep the nuts from backing off and I agree that $3 is not a lot; however, if I have to drive 3 hours round-trip to the dealer or pay $10 shipping to get them I will reuse what I have - I hate to waste money. I may give him a try though but not having a matching steering wheel crest might bother me.
Mod-free?! Man, I have never left stock vehicles stock since I consider what I do as a hobby, which always requires doing something!

Hey Bob.... I got a steering wheel crest from “Jim” about a year or so back. Did he stop making them? Did you talk with him? His quality is really good, but as others have said he’s kinda hard to get a hold of. I had problems with the pins lining up and one time the weld broke as well but used other attachments. I’ve gotten several crests from him. The rubber on the back of the nuts sometimes comes out or gets hard. There aren’t actual threads on the nut.....that’s why the rubber.

Thanks and I will see if Jim can make me a steering wheel crest. I told him what I wanted and he replied by telling me how he would make them but did not mention the steering wheel crest so I assumed he no longer made them. How did he make yours in regards to attaching it?

There are two ways to attach the steering wheel crest that I found. You can use 3m tape....lots of thicknesses to use. Don’t wat to use to thick cuz when ya put it on it sticks off to far from the original. I used commercial grade silicone.... rubbed a small bit on the back of the new crest and pressed it over top of the old one and taped it lo let dry for 24 hours. Worked great. One thing is the original seems to have a slight curvature to it. Noticed when I dry fit it first. I took a pair of pliers with tape around jaws so I wouldn’t scratch it and put a slight curve to it on both sides and fit perfect. It bends very easy.
It’s been on for 2 years without any issues. Hope this helps!

Very nice, just what I want albeit with Miami Blue in place of the Black. I will continue to try and get in touch with Jim and see if I can get the entire set (hood, wheels & steering wheel).

No worries, I knew you were all joking!
I got it from that same guy but from eBay. Took about 20 days to get it, but the fit and finish is excellent!
The nuts have some sort of rubbery material that gets destroyed once you remove the old nuts.
For $3 you can't go wrong getting new ones!
