Default Need new rears....what to do?

All:

Got in the car yesterday and immediately got a tire pressure warning. Dash showing passenger rear at 20 psi. At work. An hour from home. Nuts. Good thing I’m prepared with a plug kit and a 12v pump.

The gauge on the pump verified that the tire tire was indeed at 20, so I inflated it to 35 psi. By the time I got home I had lost about 3 psi. Down some more this morning but I couldn’t find anything so I inflated again. By the time I went out after lunch, I was down 3 psi again so I went in the hunt and finally found it...screw or bolt right on the inner shoulder. Definitely in the official “do not fix” zone. Plus, in looking at the rears, they are just about at the wear bars. They have 9k miles on them.

The fronts have 8k and look like they have plenty of life left. And therein lies the rub. I want to switch to the Michelins or maybe the New Continentals. I know everyone loves the Michelins but I am a total convert to the Conti DWS / DWS 06 having run them on 4 different vehicles now. The higher treadwear and lower price is nice.

But it I hate to be wasteful. Think someone on here might buy the fronts? I could also try my local PCA chapter as well. These Pirellis have been LOUD since I got the car, and I’d love to ditch them. Do I just do it? And do I get the Contis or just suck it up and go with the Michelins? My cab doesn’t see a lot of super spirited driving. No track.

Also, stick with 295 rears or opt for the 305’s? I have factory spacers, if that helps.

Thanks.

Had the same decision yesterday with N0 pzeros. Rears were done and fronts had only 4K. I got a set of 4Ss and will sell the pzero fronts or keep as spares. The Michelins feel great and have many positive reviews on them. I hate waste too and hopefully someone will buy the used fronts. I just couldn’t try a new tire half way. Tough call for you but I’d recommend the set of Michelins.

Buy two new PZeros in the 305. They are no louder than the Michelins. All old tires get loud. Then, in 9,000 more miles, replace all four with the flavor of the year winner.

Yes, I do likewise. Fronts outlast rears two to one, so a set of rears is the smart thing to do.

Thumbs up

Hi,
i have a cab and went through this same exercise several months ago. I went to Michelin’s all the way around and bit the bullet. Very happy with my choice. Subjectively, the ride is nicer and was quieter. I upsized to 305 and was super happy with look too.
Good luck.

Check out my Cup 2 thread. I had a situation that you described verbatim.

Kept my front pirellis with plenty of life on them as back ups

Buy all 4 new one. If you're on the east coast or rainy climate go with the 4S. I've asked two tire pros and they've both told me the 4S is a better tire and handles heat better than the P-Zero.

Do you really want to wait another 9k miles for a nice new set? That's a long ways away and you never know what can happen along the way. Enjoy the car to the fullest while you can.

After my switch I am on the boat that believes the Pirellis are inferior for this car unless they're brand new. After a few thousand miles the P zeros are just not as good.

Two additional new fronts are $500? Get four new ones. LexVan knows of what he speaks.

I would get two rears of whatever you like and drive your car until the fronts wear down, then replace them. No problem with it at all.

I would buy a set of the Bridgestone AS980 all seasons. Supposedly they are similar to DWS and they come in 305 reads.

I had to change the rear PZeros last year but the front ones were fine. After some deliberation, I replaced all 4 with PS4S. Going forward I'll just do the tears only, when due, with more of the same.

I usually have my front outlast my rears by 2x. So just like others said buy 2 rears. Problem solved
