Default Opinion on 20" vs 21" Wheels & Tires

Picked up my new GTS back in June and ordered the car with the five lug Carrera S wheels to become my winter set when the time arrives.

I'm looking to buy a new set of wheels for summer and want to know what people think of going up to a 21" combination??

My choices are I can reuse my summer tires and put them onto a set of wheels that are 20x9" and 20x11.5" or I can go up to 21x9.5" and 21x12.5" with 255/30R21 and 325/25R21, which my local tuner shop is offering as fitting with no rubbing issues.

Currently HRE P101 in Satin Charcoal are the wheels of choice.

Here's a picture of my car to offer perspective.

Great looking car!

Since you asked.

21" wheels are:

Too big
Too heavy
Too expensive
Tires are too expensive
Tires are too heavy
Will defeat your PCCB weight savings

Remember the days that 18" wheels were big?

I think mono block lightweight forged wheels in 21" look perfect and minimize tradeoff in weight. You could also go with a 20" and a beefier tire, completely up to you. GT3's run Sport Cup 2's, but the MPS4's also look more aggressive in my opinion in the same width as the PZeros.

I too have a GTS, but with the CL wheels on PZeros. I prefer the look of the MSP4's

Personally, P101 in 21".. I think you have your answer. Great looking car BTW!

I must admit the 21" does look good.

Here's another example that my local shop sent me for some eye candy for everyone.

Make sure you don't interfere with the already very minimal barrel clearance to the big yellow calipers.

If you are looking to get deep rim design which I got, wheels look smaller than the actual size so I really recommend you to get 21.
But some designs like attached, even you get 20 it looks like 21 because the spokes are reaching to the outer lip.

I'm agreeing with this and will add one additional reason not to go to 21". If a a lower aspect ratio is selected to maintain tire diameter (revs/mile), the 21" tires have a higher probably of failure when hitting potholes and such.

19-20” look right on a 911 but 21” really only suits the GT2 RS (and only on the rear as standard). On any other model it looks a bit “Max Power”-ish (a UK tuning mag from 10 years ago), IMHO.

As others have said, if you like the look then go for it but you are sacrificing handling, ride and reliability and paying more for that privilege. Yes, you can get ultra-light magnesium wheels to offset the weight gain but why not get the ultra-lights in 20” and make it the same or better than it was before in those areas...?

Talk to wise Rennlister "flickroll" about barrel scoring and caliper chipping on the big yellows as it relates to wheel size and the selection process.

We get this question from customers very often and the simplest way you can break it down is this: do you think 21's look better on your car than 20's do? If so, are you ok with trading some ride comfort for the better looks? If both answers are yes then 21's are right for you. If you answer either question with a no then the 20's should be your choice.

As the largest dealer in the world for custom forged wheels we've photographed dozens of 991's over the years (some with 20's and some with 21's). It might be worth looking at our extensive 991 gallery to see if there is a specific setup that you'd like to replicate and we can get it done for you while also saving you hard earned cash - http://wheelsboutique.com/gallery/po...s/porsche-991/

20's are already big rims given the size of a 991. 21's remind me of when people put 19's on earlier 911's. The proportions are way off and the car looks goofy. My $.02

Perfect setup! I would not touch it. I'm looking for a set of silver S' wheels for my car. At the end of the day I'm a silver wheel kinda guy & sport techno's are just to open.

My Cayenne GTS and my Macan Turbo both had 21". But i only bought those two because they were great deals. Every day i owned each of them, i wished they had had the 20"ers!
