Default Talk me out of somewhat impulse buying a 991.1 4S, please.

I got my first Porsche, a manual 981 Boxster GTS, less than a year ago. My wife and I fell instantly in love. She will no longer ride in the Miata. We took the BGTS on a 4,000 mile road trip that included two 15 hour drives, only stopping for gas. Perfectly comfortable with no fatigue (18 way seats). Then a few weeks later we went on a quick trip that was 300 miles each way. Since I knew I was going to have to give my car to a valet we took our BMW 4 Gran Coupe. After an hour or two we both regretted my decision. Beautiful car with a great drivetrain, fantastic as a daily driver, tons of room due to the hatch, but lacking in seat comfort for more than an hour or so.

There are no Porsche dealerships in my state so every Friday I search for local used Porsches. No intention of buying one; I just like to go look at them on the dealer lot. I tell the salesman the same thing and always refuse the offer of a drive. This week a 991.1 Carrera 4S showed up. My wife loathes car shopping, and only accompanied me to look at this car because we were waiting for a restaurant to open. We checked it out and refused the standard offer of a test drive. As we were walking back to our car I asked her what she thought. To my utter shock she said she really liked it. I jokingly asked if we should come back after lunch for a test drive. To my utter astonishment she said we should. I know I mentioned it earlier, but I should emphasize again how much my wife *hates* looking at cars. We went back after lunch for the test drive. Unfortunately traffic didn't cooperate and it was about the most worthless test drive I've ever experienced. But I gleaned enough to understand how Porsche models relate to one another much like BMW models relate to one another.

I never, ever considered getting a 911. A Macan would make WAY more sense for me as a daily driver. When my wife tires of her current vehicle she's said she wants to move to a Macan, though I think the Cayenne would be a better fit for her due to frequently having multiple passengers. Either way I don't really want to have two of the same vehicle.

So, knowing nothing about 911s, talk me out of replacing my BMW with a well-equipped 991.1 4S. I have a friend with a base 2018 Carrera. I'm going to take it for a quick drive this week to see how I feel about the NA 3.8 with the PDK versus the turbo 3.0 with the PDK. As much as I love my NA 981, I wonder if the 3.0 turbo might be a better fit for daily driving with the PDK.

Not going to talk you out of buying a 991, either .1 or .2.
"I really regret buying that 911", said NO ONE EVER.

You should not buy the 991.1 4S... when you can buy a 991.2 4S.

Haha. Thanks for far.

Let me approach the issue from a different angle...

Are there any glaring flaws in the 991.1?

I guess what I'm getting at is by no means do I *need* to replace my BMW. I had planned to keep it another couple of years and replace it with a Macan GTS or M2. Replacing it with a 911 is an... interesting new idea. But if the 991.2 is markedly better than the 991.1 I'm perfectly content to drive the BMW a couple more years and consider a CPO 991.2 at that time.

Just to state the obvious: this is not really the place to get talked out of buying a 991.1 4S. Just the fact that you are here indicates that your decision has already been made. - Congratulations!

I'm probably not going to be talked out of a 911. Just trying to decide if I should be talked out of a 991.1 911.

The 991.1 is slower but sounds better than the .2.

The 991.2 will be faster and you'll never question the sound as long as you don't drive a .1.

The extra power of the .2 can be good or bad depending on your driving style and what you like. If you stay in lower speeds then you just play with the very lower range of RPMs. If you want to competitively track it then I imagine the .2 would be better.

You'd know for sure if you drove both in the areas you plan to daily drive. But then you'd know what the .1 sounds like, which ideally if you end up wanting the .2 then that will be your only regret.

Driving your friends 991.2 should tell you everything you need to know. There is more torque earlier in the .2 due to turbos. That's what got me convinced to order a Carrera T. I'm sticking with the manual but I hear the PDK is great too, especially ad DD duty.

I drove a new 991.1 C2S with the power kit but chose a 991.2 C2. The low end torque is beautiful, but you will have to give up some exhaust note. Having said that, on a recent visit I was greeted at the door because they could hear my car coming down the street from inside their house while watching TV. I had the sport exhaust turned on.

If you need AWD where you are, that is a great option. I have read that AWD changes the car's characteristics., so you might check on that.

That's pretty much what I went through with my BGTS. Having never driven the 981 or the 982 I was convinced I wanted the turbo four. Newer, better looking, better infotainment, faster, more low end torque. Who cares if it doesn't sound as good as the NA flat six? Then I drove a 981 S. Fell in love immediately. Then I spent 3 days driving a 982 S trying to convince myself it was a better fit. Then five minutes in a 981 S again and that was all she wrote. Ended up with my 981 GTS. Figured I could get a turbo any time in the future. Clock was already ticking on picking up a cherry NA flat six.

My wife said she still preferred the sound of my 981 GTS over the 991.1 4S. Mid engine and top down will do that.

First, there is a reason why a Turbo S has AWD - it is for handling not for driving in snow. They are better handling and will be safer in wet conditions. What year is the 911 and is it a CPO? The 911 will certainly be more fun to drive than the BMW and neither one would be better than a Macan for a daily commute as there are so many SUVs out there which can have trouble seeing a car. I would say that the Boxster will always be the most fun but if you have a regular commute of some distance than the 911 with PDK should be better.

If you plan on transporting adults over 5' tall regularly in the back seats, then you may want to look at other options, otherwise you will be extremely satisfied with the 991.1
