About a 2-3inch transverse crack outer tread R rear tire. Almost looks like it was cut with a knife. About 9600 miles on the tire which looks like it has some life o/w. In the last picture it looks like you can see the steel belts on the inside of the cut but rubber lays flat over it when the tire is rolling. No air leaks. I don't intend to track it in the near future but would you be paranoid about driving on the street with this? Thanks for any input.

If you do replace both, be sure to save the other one. It might come in handy as a spare if you lose another tire in the future with nearly similar mileage.

Thanks for the responses guys. I wonder what in the road would make a cut like this. Ugg. I hate to have to replace these tires with tread left

A pothole with a 90 edge can shear the rubber like that if you it it just right. Happened to me twice in 5 years with my previous Toyota Highlander DD.

yup... have been driving for 60 years now and have seen a cut like that a number of times..... unfortunately I can't tell you specifically why it happened ... usually a pot hole, some debris on the road, etc. ..... I've seen real light slices and deep slices ... looks like yours might be on the side that needs to be replaced but can't guarantee that from the photo.....

Where did you buy the tire? For example, Tire Rack now includes road hazard warranty. Maybe you're covered??

Hi Jim,
Look to your road hazard warranty. Almost all tire shops include one now when purchasing tires (even if purchased online). If they are factory installed, ask your service rep...

Tires are OEM P zeros. I know there is some sort of a warranty card with my owners manual. I'll have to look at it. I know from previous experience with MPSS tires on an M4 that were worn before their 15K mile estimated life, its hard to get these warranties to pay.

Don't bother. OE tires don't include a road hazard warranty in the US.

my wife had a similar cut in her tire on her BMW and before we could get it replaced, it exploded on the highway. I'd get it replaced ASAP. I did what many here have mentioned- I replaced both tires on that axle and used the good tire as my new spare.

You only need to buy one new shaved tire from Tire Rack. Measure in 1/32s and order. A new rear is 9/32 FYI.

Thanks for the info Lex. I've heard about people doing this. I assume a new 'shaved' tire is the cost of a new tire plus a little extra for the 'shaving'. And shaving to 1/32? Isn't it better to buy 2 new ones when they are pretty worn?
