Wow those painted reflectors look....like...painted reflectors. Like with a can of spray paint as you were walking by. So out of place. Why oh why? To each his own...
I cannot stand the rear red reflectors but I agree the painted ones look painted, which is why I may try them in black. Silly question: what does it look like with the reflector taken out? Maybe it would look better with mesh?
I got mine from bumper plugs.com and they are an exact paint match to the factory color albeit they certainly do look "painted".

That is where I got mine as well and they are painted with the factory color. Of course they look painted the same way the bumper looks painted. My option was to stay with the red (not desired), have bodywork done on the bumper to remove the reflectors (would rather spend the money on other mods) or to use the bumper plugs product. I went with the option that I preferred based on cost and if I ever get ticketed for the painted reflectors I can swap them back to the red ones.
i am thinking of removing the red reflector and tinting them from the back to see how it looks
stay tuned for picts :-)
Do me/us a favor and take a pic when you remove the reflector so I/we can see what it looks like. Again, putting a piece of mesh there might be an option. I am still leaning toward a matte black painted option vice Miami Blue for my car.

why mesh? to make it look like an air duct outlet?

Maybe, depending on what it looks like with the reflector removed. I really do not like the red reflector and if I get it painted it looks painted, as others have said as well. So I am trying to think of another option...I wish they came with a smoked lens.
