Default Cracked Oil Drain Plug!

So, after changing the oil in my 2014 991 C2S about five times now, the oil drain plug started leaking oil.

I was worried I had over-torqued it and maybe stripped the oil pan itself.

After removal, I noticed it was cracked! What the hell? I never thought this would happen. I only replace the crush washer, not the entire oil drain plug itself.

I torque this drain plug to the spec of 37 foot pounds, but maybe after five changes, it's too much.

SUMMARY

After every fourth-oil change, replace both the oil drain plug (its an $8.00 part) and the crush washer.

I'm attaching photo's for fun.

Here's a close-up. 0W40 oil will find its way out of this crack.

The entire top and sunken in!

The crack is across the top and though the crown itself.

Buy a magnet billet plug from L&N Engineering. Torque spec is only a low 19 ft.lbs.

Oil pan drain plugs are made of very soft metal (the idea being the plug fails before it strips the pan threads). Not sure about Carreras but on GT3, suncoast sells the plugs as part of the oil change kit. I figure makes sense to at least have a spare around.

^ Agree..This gives you a good initial impression of your engine during oil changes.

I swap the plug with each oil change, cheap piece of mind.

Plus, the magnet provides added protection by removing iron particles from the oil. This is usually a consideration during break-in, but with long drain intervals, every little bit helps.

I am almost sixty and usually own half a dozen cars at a time and done my own oil changes since sixteen years old. I have never had a plug crack before and I am not about to start buying new plugs for every car I own every time I do an oil change. If my 991 oil plug is cracking this easily...... this should be the least of my problems and maybe I should go back to air cooled Porsches. If having a magnetic plug is so important ....then I am also disappointed that Porsche did not include it.

Porsche suggests replacing the crush washer with EVERY oil change (not the plug).

+1 same as Lexvan since the plug is magnetized with a lower torque setting. The downside is the manufacture recommends replacing the plug every oil change at $25 - $29 is pricy.

How sad.....there is no justification for that except that they can't even make a reusable oil plug. Must be sourced out to China...LOL Yes, they resolved the issue by making the oil pan and the plug on the 991,.2 out of plastic so you must change the plug every time....usually included with the oil filter. Just don't have a rock hit the pan.....or maybe you should carry an additional oil pan, gasket set just in case.

Really? I've owned five 911's now and this is the first time I ever heard we should be replacing the oil drain plug and crush washer for every oil change.

Thanks for the info. on this.

I'll add this to my routine.
