Funny. Had one a few weeks back as a loaner. Like 1,500 miles on the odometer.
Yes, well planted and pretty quick for a 4 banger. Sound? Sucked and no emotion to the car. Moves but no excitement with lack high revs and no sound to go with it. Doesn't give you an "experience" if that makes sense. No sense of drama. Lack of character. Other than car getting up to speed, didn't give me any satisfaction getting there. It's sad.
I owned a 987.2 and 981.1 and really enjoyed them both. Other than being rattle traps, they were engaging and fun. I have thought about buying another.

Agree. The 718 Boxster S loaner I had was a stunningly nearly flawless performer and impeccable chassis. Having a Macan at the time, I had an amazing time in it and it inspired me to get a sports P Car. But my issues with the engine character and demeanor echo yours exactly.
The 981 GTS on the other hand is a personality masterpiece.

But someday we will remember how turbo fours (and maybe even turbo twos) sounded, compared to the truly bland all-electric drivetrains.
I must be getting old or something. I had a pretty loaded ($75K) base-718 Cayman loaner recently while my wife's Cayenne was getting a new transfer case. I was generally impressed by the car, had no issues with the sound at all. I liked the size a lot. I'd forgotten how nice that was in the GT4. My only reaction - seems like a ton of money for what it is.
