Default Help with possible thermostat issue!

I have a '13 C4S and got the "cooling system fault" yellow warning, no engine light though. Warning came on and went off about 8 times in a 5 minute interval before finally going off for good. Pulled DTC P0597 out of DME stating 'Thermostat driver'. Coolant temp remained normal. Is this commonly going to be a thermostat stuck open, would a changeover valve cause this code? Thanks

You need a new thermostat.

Hope you’re still under warranty.

Thanks for the replies fellas. I assumed the thermostat to be be faulty rather than a COV due to the code stored. Guess I'll have to give it a go, doesn't seem to be to bad of a job. The car is under CPO but Dealer is an hour away and the parts are not that expensive. I'd rather just change it myself because I've had numerous bad experiences with dealers of all makes. Now I just do my own work to insure its done correctly and nothing is damaged to careless rushing for a bigger paycheck. I am a technician of many, many years but this is my first 911 experience so it's a learning curve for now. It seems like every time I buy a car it needs a thermostat. lol. My two prior BMW M3's and now the 911 needed thermostats within the first 5k miles of ownership.

Also, double check your battery. Has been known to trigger codes if it's on its last leg.

^^^ The car is generally kept on a battery tender when not in use, but battery is certainly not new by any means. I will give it a thorough look, my M3 I had did some kooky things when battery was getting old. Thanks for the heads up.

Default go for it

I'd say go for it, this car is really modular and seems to come apart and go back together as if they planned on owners wrenching on them.

A COV can cause the issue you're having. The PIWIS tester generally can't "see" the COVs unless there is a leaky plumbing issue or electrical fault (not bad/stuck valve) My car was stuck with the AC "ON" and I couldn't select heat. Others get stuck with heat on but can't select AC.

^^^^^ I fiddled around with trying to make the fault happen and I can duplicate it by unplugging the tstat. Disconnecting vacuum lines or COV’s results in completely different dtc’s in PCM but will also give same warning in the dash. Which still leads me to point at the tstat itself. At any rate, I have a new tstat coming Friday and will change it out over the weekend. I’ll post results here when I’m done. Fingers crossed, but I’m pretty confident I’m on the right track.

keep us updated. I had the same issues from what you described and it was COV's for me.

UPDATE: I received the new thermostat from the dealer and before I installed it I used a multi meter to compare the resistance of the known good thermostat to my suspected faulty thermostat. Both had a reading of 16 Ohms at rest which led me to believe the thermostat is actually not faulty and its possible to be a connection issue. I lightly compressed the female pins in the plug to make a tighter connection when its plugged in and cleaned the connections with electrical contact cleaner and a terminal file. I left the old thermostat in the car and cleared the code. No code returned in 500 miles so far. I'm going to hang on to the new tstat in case the old one is sporadically failing, but right now I'm leaning towards the plug connection being the issue as the problem appears to be gone. Time will tell.
