Replacing center console trim piece
Greetings. I bought a 2015 991.1 CPO over a year ago. I really enjoy this forum for great tips and general entertainment value. I could use some advice on replacing the center console trim piece. As many of you probably know, the shiny trim piece really emits a lot of glare when it is sunny outside. I ordered the black leather trim piece from Suncoast. I found one post on this where it looks simple to replace https://rennlist.com/forums/987-981-...placement.html I was in the new Porsche dealership in Irvine today and asked the SA if it is indeed this easy. He didn't know and asked a tech. The tech said that it requires 3 hours of labor as the PCM has to be pulled out. I am now confused. Has anyone done this replacement? As per newbie protocol, I attached a picture of my car. This is my seventh Porsche and fifth 911 (1987 Targa, 1995 993, 2006 997S, 1997 993S, then this 991.1). Thank you in advance.

It must take the tech 2.5 hours to get the car into the garage.
Just watch the side pieces....... they have locating pins and some type of clip at the bottom. Broke both on both sides of my car but there are so many clips on those pieces I never missed them.

It's extremely easy to replace and will take about 15-30 minutes even if you're extremely cautious.
Read this thread on replacing the MT shifter: https://rennlist.com/forums/991/9662...carrera-s.html

- Helps if you have plastic trim removal tools, but I think you can do these steps just with your fingers.
- Pop off the side trim pieces (at the front of these pieces, make sure you don't pry them "out" - only "up" otherwise you'll break clips like I did (no big deal, used PVC glue and they're good to go).
- Pop out the silver trim piece
- Transfer the rubber gasket from the back of the silver trim to your new piece (if the leather one didn't come with this rubber backing)
- Press the new trim into place
- Insert the side pieces, starting from the front, up and in, and then snap the rest of the clips along the transmission tunnel.

What does the back look like? Is it the same as the one in the instructions you linked? If so, I would assume it just pulls out and snaps in. No need to remove anything else from what I can see. 3 hrs labor.. I don't see why.

I checked on removing the side trim pieces and found this set of instructions. It looks like it is possible to do without removing the side trim pieces. Has anyone tried it without removing those? (less pieces to remove is less possible broken clips). Thanks again in advance. https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...jpg-heavy.html

The 6SOL referenced above is spot on. Center trim piece comes out without need to remove anything else. It's a 5-10 minutes job if you do it yourself, but 3 hrs if you have the dealership do it. What a joke.

Makes me wonder about this dealership. After he got back from talking to the tech, I said "are you sure, there are instructions online about this". Oh yes, it is a 3 hour job (around $600) as the trim piece is hooked under the controls and the whole PCM has to come out. And this is a brand new dealership in the new Porsche style with the giant tech area viewable with giant windows from the super nice waiting area. I guess if they are charging $600 for a five minute job is how they afford the new digs. Thanks again to everyone for confirming my suspicions.

Hi Keith!
I replaced ALL the silver trim and it took about 30-40 min. Get the plastic trim tools and to just do the silver trim on center console, it’ll TAKE ABOUT 10 min max!
Don’t have to remove side pieces. Go to Macarbon.com and he has pictures and videos on doing this stuff. He does carbon fiber replacements but his pictures for DIY are great. The SA at this dealer is someone you should NEVER trust with your car! He has no idea what he telling you. Hope this helps.

I changed out all of the silver trim pieces with leather. It's incredibly easy. You just need to get the trim tool.

It literally took me ten minutes, with taking pictures. No tools needed. Lift the center consul cover and carefully pry the bottom of the trim piece up with your fingers. From there you can work your way up the sides. Simple as can be.

No trim tool needed, no damage, no more than 5-10 minutes to do it, and no squeaks or rattles.

Thanks to everyone for the helpful tips and confirming that the SA (and a tech) at the Porsche Dealer in Irvine had no idea what he was talking about.
