991 Series 911 More Comfortable To Drive Than 997 Series Car?

My budget right now is maxed out at about $69,999.00. In 24 months I should have $85k available. I had a very nice Carrera 4 GTS available to me for my current budget, but I can't even begin to touch a 991, even just a Carrera 4s, at anything close to that. Those are running $15-20k more. I could easily afford a nice used, mint condition, low miles, M4 for this money, and I have long been a BMW guy. But, you absolutely cannot find them with the Competition Package, and 95% of them seem to come with automatic transmissions (BMW's isnt remotely as good as Porsche's PDK). And they are noted for an unusually harsh ride, regardless of settings, per both major magazines. And living in the Detroit Metro area, home of the third worst roads in America, thats a concern.

997 is a great car and the GTS is a beauty. The 991 is a step up in refinement. But if you can work out the ergonomics of the 997 and it fits your budget too it is a great car with great road feel and driving characteristics. Not a bad choice at all and could set you up for a 992 in the future. Had 2 997's myself.

Fair enough, but I'm 5"11" and reasonably slim. I don't care about a feeling of airiness and for me, the extra space simply represents a heavier, less nimble car. I like the sense of a shrink-wrapped cockpit. The early-Nineties Mazda RX-7 was about right, though it was shy on luggage space.

Go 911! i ditched my M4 and we are now shopping for a 991. For $70k, you can get a nice 4; maybe not a 4S, but do you need it? I test drove an entry-level 2 and the power felt close to my M4, and more fun. The 2 is hard to find with the "performance" options that a lot of people want, which is why we are looking at the 2S and GTS, but if you can find a good base car, do it! There is a good video online of a track battle between an M4 and a base C2 991: 991 won handily. It is a better car. I have seen clean 40k mile 991 models in the mid 50's, some with cool options. Keep shopping, and don't think you need an S or GTS model coming from an M4: any 991 will be an improvement.

Currently in a 997.2 S with a sunroof. I have a longish torso so head room is at a premium. I like that I could gain a little head room in a non-sunroof 991. My seat is pretty far back so I would also love to have some extra room for my little ones.

I never know how I feel about a car from a test drive. Couple miles drive up the highway, u turn , and right back to the dealer, all while being nervous about dinging the car while the salesman is directing you where to turn...
Because of this I find other's opinions very helpful. Now if you can take the car out alone for a few hours, or even better for 24 hours - that's a different story.

Second, ask ten people and you end up with ten different opinions.
I guess I was fortunate that the salesperson gave me the key to the 911s I test drove and let me drive them on my own.

Comparison of 997 Carrera Coupe to 991 Carrera Coupe (Base model cars with PDK transmission):
Weight: 2009: 3,186 lbs., 2013: 3,153 lbs. (991 is 33 lbs. lighter)
Length: 2009: 175.83", 2013: 177.10" (991 is 1.27" longer)
Width: 2009: 71.20", 2013: 71.20" (width is identical)
Height: 2009: 51.60", 2013: 50.90" (991 is 0.70" lower)
Having owned both cars, I find the 991 to be superior in terms of handling and ride. The 991 is more nimble in my opinion.

We changed the downpipes on mine. My husband bought them from a vendor on the M3 forum. The car sounded great, vs the rattle can sound when I first got her

991 is more comfortable than a 997 without question. Also, I am 6'5" 200lbs or so and fit fine in a 997. Wish there was maybe a tad bit more room around the steering wheel and my legs but still have a couple inches to spare. Something to note, manual seats do not work for me due to lack of thigh support. Electric seats of some sort are much better.
Drive both and decide from there. If you want comfort, BMW, Audi or Mercedes is your better bet. Or potentially a Panamera.

I get your point, but it's not heavier or less nimble. It also isn't exactly huge inside, just a bit bigger. Here are the stats directly from Porsche Press Kits:

The 991 is not heavier at all and WAY more nimble (even without RWS). Drives amazing (better in my opinion) and also more compliant and comfortable at the same time.
