Default The electric parking brake finally does some good

In speaking with a Porsche R&D engineer, I learned that even Porsche engineers hate the e-brake in 981/991 cars. In living with it in press cars, it never seemed intuitive. And in living with it for two years in a GT4 and now in a 991.2 on a daily basis, it truly isn't intuitive.

Today, however, I learned that it REALLY isn't intuitive, as an office neighbor walked out to find her new Porsche in the driveway, running. Her husband had left his briefcase "reachable" with the Porsche key in it, but the thieves couldn't figure out how to disable the Porsche's parking brake. So they took his Lincoln instead...to a Denny's 20 miles away.

The Porsche sat in the driveway all night, idling away.

that. is. hilarious!

(I knew there had to be a good reason for the brake being set up the way it is. I think we found it!)

what annoys me:

On my cayenne it's pull to release, push to set
On the sports cars Its the opposite process (at least on my GT4)

Or something like that, it's opposite.

What idiots. E brake may not be intuitive, but it aint that difficult to figure out.
Imagine that, taking the Lincoln and leaving the Porsche.
Who would have thunk it.

I think manual gearboxes are destined to be the the greatest anti-theft device in the coming years. In conjunction with the unintuitive/partially hidden parking brake, my car will be unstealable.

I figure my early 911 (carburetors and a 901 gearbox) is basically unstealable. Thieves wouldn't understand that carbureted engines don't idle when cold, so they'd think the car was broken. Plus if they even drove manual, they'd put it in first and the car would go in reverse.

Manual transmission, e-brake, and I have the PCM set to German: I could probably leave my 991.2 unlocked with the key on the dash.

Yeah what I liked when I had the Pan e-hybrid is that unless certain parameters were in place, the engine would not "start", and that would confuse the average thief.

I like this P-brake concept. Good tip.

I wet myself reading this!

Pete. Im with you on the e-brake. Have lived with it for almost 5 years through a succession of P-Cars. All our fleet have e-brake now but the Porsche system is the least intuitive. I still pull it instead of push it 50% of the time (slow learner). I agree its in a fairly obscure location compared to other VAG products. Im in a 7MT 991.2 as you now now and my biggest fear is I forget to put it one. At least in the PDK cars it sets itself automatically!

I mapped it in my head with how the parking brake in my F150 works.

991: Push with hand to set = F150: push parking brake pedal with foot

Both: pull handle to release

I was going to say the same. And full on the gas tank is on the left side of the gauge in one, and the right in the other.
