15 GTS or 17 S
Hello Porsche Enthusiasts,
I am a newbie but have been lurking around and educating myself for a while as I am seriously considering a 911 purchase.
Always loved Porsche but never owned one for family reasons, now at 61 I would like to buy one sol don't regret that I have not owned a Porsche during my lifetime.
I need your opinions as to which one to go for as I am torn between these two Vehicles
2015 911GTS M/T 22000 miles, CPO
2017 911S M/T plenty of options 2100 miles (Chrono, full leather, High end Burmister, adaptive seats, premium package and so on).
Price wise they are within one thousand between them, so it is not a factor.
For me no track or racing, just cruising around and punch it once a while. Prefer the softer ride.
Driven 997.2 but no 991 and will do that shortly
Typically keep the car 2 to 3 years then trade it in.
I appreciate your input.

GTS because it has the NA engine. I have a 2016 GTS (PDK) and it is by far the best car I have ever driven (although that may change when I pick up my GT3 Touring in Stuttgart in October). I heard a 991.2 drive by the other day. The turbo whistle and the turbo engine is a deal breaker for me. This topic has been discussed extensively on RL - many posts about which to buy, 991.1 or 991.2. All else being relatively equal (mileage, cost, specs), it comes down to whether you prefer the NA engine over the turbo engine and how much do the 991.2 upgrades mean to you (higher low-end torque due to the FI engine, rear wheel steering, Apple car play)?

Here is the reality about 911 owners. I have pretty much purchased a new turbo as my daily driver every 2 or 3 years since 1988/89. There are some like me that always look forward to the newest, latest greatest to pick up as soon as they come out. I have to say that each new generation has been a joy to jump into and has been an improvement over the previous model . . . and yes, I have had and enjoyed my 01 tt, 03 tt and 04 tt cab after owning both a 993 tt and 993 ttS.
Then there is the other group of 911 owners that have the previous model that will be very resistant to and bash the newest models for a litany of reasons, but usually they wind up touting the newer model as the latest, greatest 911 when they trade in the old for the new and realize the newer is actually better.
The 991.2 S is simply next level compared to the NA 991.1s. Base/non-turbo designated 911s, thanks to forced induction, are now reaching super car level performance.

You probably won’t be able to find a MT in both models at your local dealer. So go to your dealer drive a .1s or gts in pdk and drive a .2s in pdk. The only measurable difference in the MT between the .1 and .2 is the .1 has a heavier clutch if that matters to you. Once you drive both and take my clutch comment into consideration you’ll probably know which one you prefer. Both great and you can’t go wrong IMO. Good luck to you.

Preference between NA and turbo should be your only priority as both are MT.
I prefer the NA.
In the end you're not buying a 911 for the sound system...

Tough one. As an owner of a 991.2 4s, I may come across as biased. Both are used cars. If they were new, I would pick the GTS with the NA engine. I love my car but miss the sound of the NA flat six. The turbo sixes are very fast and just about everything has been updated but the sound is gone. If you care for that. If not, the newer one.

At 58, I just bought my first Porsche. I purchased a 2017 911S and just came from a 2015 z51 Corvette. My Corvette was a manual and loved the car. However, I have to say the 911 with PDK is just a little better in every way. Better quality, ride, noise insulation and straight line performance. The 911 has all the performance goodies plus rear axle steering. Absolutely love it! I did test drive a 991.1, and while they are nice they are a notch below the 991.2 in several areas as you can research and read from many that have owned both. The 991.2 has more suspension travel in the dampers for a better ride, infotainment is faster, improved Bose radio, improved and more responsive PDK, which I know will not matter to you since you want a manual. Perhaps the biggest game changer is the addition of twin turbos in the 991.2. They are much quicker and pull harder at a lower rpm with a flat torque curve. Very impressive, even after coming from a C7 manual with a 6.2L engine rated at 460 HP and 465 torque with the performance exhaust. Car and Driver has tested the 991.2 S at 3.1 to 60 as compared to my C7 being 3.8. You will find the traditional buyers favor the old 3.8 NA engine. The only thing I read the 3.8 is better at is making noise. I for one, could not tell any noticeable difference in sound when I drove a 991.1 and a 991.2 back to back. I feel my newly purchased 991.2 sounds great at idle or WOT. Personally, it was an extremely easy decision for me. Between the two cars, and they were both S cars, the 991.2 was superior in all the ways I have already noted. In summary, in my opinion, if you want the best day to day driving car get the 991.2. If you plan to stand on the side of the road and listen to your car as someone else does a drive by get the 991.1.

Just an update, the 991.2 is manual 7 speed transmission while the 991.1 GTS is PDK and is listed on cars.com as M/T
I slightly prefer PDK but do not mind manual as I drove this type of transmission for 25 years.

So the plot thickens. I would go .2 manual over .1pdk but it’s soooo close.

Only opinion I could give is that the NA engines you really get the best pull during high revs, the turbo gives you alot more low end torque and may be better as a daily driver.
Hope that helps, both great choices though.

While you may find some influences to your decision here, I'm pretty certain you'll find your answer once you test-drive both. Ideally you should try to find a dealer that will let you try both back to back.

Agree you need to test drive both. You'll see the .2 is definitely not as quiet as people on here make it out to be. Also you will see the power is available all over the rev range which I prefer on the streets.
The .1 requires higher revs to make its power and this in of itself is fun, however you can only do it in a couple gears before you're at go to jail speeds. If you prefer to wind out an engine to get the power (make you work for it as I've read here) then this will be the one for you.
Both are great in their own way, just different. You can't go wrong either way. I think any GTS holds value better than an S, although with 22k miles, how many more will you put on it before it's considered high mileage for resale purposes?
Good luck!

See if you can arrange a back to back drives of "similar" cars at a local dealer and decide for yourself.
Will you really take into consideration a bunch of internet opinions about a car purchase? Here it is, buy both!

It is truly beneficial to have such discussions from members who are very familiar with the brand. For a person like me buying his first Porsche and will spend 6 figures doing so is not very simple.
Unfortunately cars are offered by different dealers so I will have to visit both and test drive each car but back to back wont be possible.
Now after reading the responses and armed with some knowledge I can be more comfortable and look for the things mentioned here and chose accordingly.
I appreciate all the input I can get.
Thanks
