Default Difference in sports exhaust note between 991.1 and 991.2

Guys - Porsche first timer here who has just picked up a 2013 C4S 991.1 manual with factory sports exhaust. I noticed that it sounds different from the later 991.2 factory sports exhaust which appears to have more of a splutter etc. Is that the norm?

Was also wondering if the sports exhaust note should change at all when the car is in sport or sport plus mode with sports exhaust switched on? Thanks

Very hard to compare PSE on a .1 vs a .2. Remember the .1 is N/A and a 3.8. While the .2 is a 3.0 and turbo'd. (S trim here).

Yes, activation of the PSE button will change the exhaust note regardless of sport settings. At idle. At acceleration. And at throttle lift and downshifting.

Is your PSE factory or installed aftermarket?

My impression of PSE is the .2 cackles sound more programmed (sound exactly the same each time) than the .1. I've heard both in real world driving (as compared to revving in a parking lot) and while they both sound good, I would give the nod to the .1.

I program out the burbles on my .2 as it sounded as go.illini described. The exhaust note will get slightly better after burn-in, but you will not achieve the raucous note of the N.A.. The .2 trade-off is more low end torque.

Both different engines which influence the exhaust sound. Judge each on their own. They are NOT alike.

This has been discussed extensively and even had members banned over the debates.

The turbo sixes don't sound as raucous as the NA flat sixes with or without the SE. And you can hear the turbos. The SE with either engine adds a little more sound and a lot of burbles and crackles in sport mode. In normal and sport plus, the burbles and crackles go away. Overall, I prefer the sound of the NA flat six that I had in my Boxster S compared to the sound of the turbo six in my car. The SE in my Boxster also sounded better to me than the SE in the 991.2 that I drove. IMO Porsche went overboard with the burbles in the 991.2 with the SE.

LOL! To be honest, I preferred the exhaust note of my 2.7 (!!!) liter engine in my Cayman.

The OP's car (991.1) does not work this way. FYI.

To be honest, in the Cayman and Boxster, you are sitting against the engine firewall, and the induction intake is right there by your window and little left ear.

I loved that engine. It was so much fun to wind up and the handling was crazy. If only it had a sunroof, I would still have it. I missed the option for open air on country roads.

They are truly great Porsches. So many 911 owners have never been fortunate enough to experience one.

Having PSE in my .2 C4, and after just spending two weeks with my GT3, I will say that the .2 3.0 motor still sounds plenty aggressive *to me* and my ears. Not the same note, same as comparing the 9A1 motors and 9A2 motors, but it still sounds loud/angry/great to me. Better than I expected before buying the car and actually respectable compared with 4.0. That being said I will say I also don't care for the farts/burbles on overrun in sport mode but bigger problems in the world...

I stand corrected. I did not have SC in my Boxster S with the SE. In sport mode + SE on, lots of burbles and crackles. In normal mode, PSE on or off, no crackles. 991.2 burbling and crackling only in sport mode not sport plus or normal mode.

How did you program the overruns out, dealer? They get obnoxiously loud when running bypass pipes or a aggressive aftermarket exhaust and cat setup.

I would like to be able to select it in the Individual setting... why they dint enable this feature when customizing your Individual setting is beyond me. I wonder if they can do this????
