Default Hazy rear view mirror

I've had my car for about 5 weeks, now, and I've noticed a strange haziness on the interior rear view mirror. I've tried cleaners and it does not come off - I don't think it's on the surface of the mirror...

Mirror is self-dimming. Check out the giant photos below to get a glimpse of it. It's hard to get a shot of it, but you can see it at the edge of the white paper in both pics.

Any ideas what the problem could be?
Thanks in advance!

Notice the foggy haze at the bright edge of the white paper. That's what the whole mirror looks like.

Mirrors are made by taking a thin piece of aluminum or silver then applying a piece of glass over it. Looks like yours needs to be re-silvered (mirror term) and that means replacing that component behind the glass. If the car is still under warranty, I'd seek a replacement.

I agree with drcollie. That looks like really old mirrors I've seen where the "silver" has corroded. Replacement time.

I know Scott at Radar-Mirror.com repairs these and can also help with concealed radar detectors if you're into that sort of thing. He's done a number of these for folks in the DFW area and everyone seems satisfied.

Thanks for the info, ranger. I'm still under CPO warranty, though, so I'm going to take it to a dealer and have them replace it. I'm just amassing a list of issues to get them all done at once.

Current list:
  • Hazy rear view mirror
  • Separating door panels
  • Creaking sunroof
  • Rear bumper respray (was supposed to be done before purchase, but done poorly... twice)

My RVM is hazy too and you can see it only at a certain angle. Taking car in for state inspection towards end of the month, and will have dealer fix/replace mine. Does not appear to be a big deal, but kinda annoying on a $!00K + car. Poor quality control.

Just thought I'd add a note about Radar-Mirror (https://www.radar-mirror.com/) and their great service after finding this thread and discovering a solution to the "hazy" mirror issue.

I sent Radar-Mirror the unit last Monday and I already got it back (Monday). I paid an extra charge for 2nd day air shipping so I could get the mirror in time for an upcoming 3,000 mile road trip. Sending it 2nd Day Air and getting is shipped back that way got me a 1-week turn around.

I just re-installed my auto-dimming rear view mirror, and man... WHAT A DIFFERENCE! I didn't have a radar unit installed, just the auto-dimming glass replacement (still just $99 for that service) on my 2011 Cayenne S that had the "haze" issue. Now I can tell the difference between a Camry and a Highway Patrol unit at a distance. It is like a brand new unit for only $99.

I tried Radar-Mirror to fix my existing mirror because I didn't want to take the chance of inheriting someone else's possible electrical issues from an auction mirror, and I didn't feel like spending more money than I paid for either of my first two cars (I'm no spring chicken) on a new factory mirror. I am very pleased with the price AND the product.

If you're tired of your hazy rear view mirror and want it fixed, Radar-Mirror seems like a great option. It sure was for me.

I never followed up with this, but the issue was just a proper cleaning! I pretty OCD and decent at scrubbing. When they told me that they cleaned it, I was in shock. Not sure what they did, but the haziness is gone after they cleaned it and I have not had the same issue again. Weird.

I have this problem on my '13 CS. Any idea what they used to clean it? I like the idea of sending it our for repair but how difficult is it to remove? I think suncoast sells the updated frameless mirror as well to retrofit.

Found the part: https://www.suncoastparts.com/product/9X1RVMIRROR.html

Just to come full circle (after 2 years, wow, time flies), I ended up finding a frameless mirror on eBay that was pulled out of a low mile GT4 (with auto dim) and just installed it. Managed to get the seller down with “best offer” of $150. New from sun coast with auto dim is $500! But BOY, what a PITA it is to install but it looks fantastic. Amazing how after 10 years, all of the plastic trim pieces gave me a hard time coming off. It’s also interesting to see the engineering Porsche did for that tiny space in terms of routing wires and plastic covers. I had to use pliers around a soft microfiber towel to twist the mirror off (counter clockwise) and reassemble.

Hi there - I have the exact same issue with mine. Dealership is quoting over 1K to replace. How hard was it for you to remove and replace? Any hints?

Thanks in advance.
