Ship delivery via the East River?

The predicted course for the Athens Highway from Emden to Davisville, RI has it going south of Long Island, into New York harbor, through the East River and Hellgate to the Long Island Sound. Obviously, the quickest way would be to go south of Cape Cod and directly into Narragansett Bay. I have no idea why they might be taking this roundabout and difficult course. (Assuming that the predicted course on marinetraffic.com is right.)
So my question is whether anyone can recall a previous delivery ship taking this course? And, if it did, why?

When I was waiting for Goodwood (sailing across the Atlantic, and landing in RI), they showed a similar route up the east river.
...it did not happen... the ship went right into RI. Don’t fret.

I would not expect a ship as large as a car carrier to traverse the East River. I've been through there on a small motor boat and can tell you it's no place for big ships. Not sure what the navigational clearances are, but there are also many bridges to cross under. I'd expect it to be a tight fit. Additionally, it is a pretty turbulent body of water passing by Manhattan. Fast current during tide changes all through that passage. Going around Long Island makes sense. Maybe they just show that route for convenience??
