LexVan the thought did occur to me so I pulled the car out of the garage and no change. However since then as I posted above seems to be working OK.
AS long as nothing else malfunctions I do not really care.

When washing the car, has anyone had the frunk open when the fob is in the cockpit? Wondering if it's risky to stow the fob there or even to be sitting in the car when it's in an automatic car wash.

LOL, this is a dangerous website to be in. Glad the guys in Morgan 3W site are not that hard, because I would not have lived long enough to buy the Carrera.

The car has multiple antennas and uses relative signal strength between the antennas to determine where the key is in relation to the car: in front of the car, near a door but outside, or inside the car. You can verify this by trying to start the car with the key just outside the door vs inside the car, it will only work when the key is inside the car.

The frunk will only pop open when both the key is nearest the antenna in the nose and your hand (or other blob of water) is near the front sensor. The front sensor detects when an object with capacitance substantially different than that of air is nearby... typically your hand.

This is definitely a problem when hand-washing the car. One quickly learns to take the key out of your pocket as you're working anywhere near the front.

so, with that logic, if I take a pee by the front of the car the frunk will open?

LOL Pmorritt, if you try it please do not post it here, these guys are super sensitive to car washes, I hate to think how they would react to that scenario.
Joke aside I would safely assume if one peed on the apron just below the lid with the key in the pocket the odds are yes.

Speaking of car washes: #1 hand wash only. #2, my frunk is a hair " under sensitive" when I'm actually trying to open it. Of course, when I wash my car and forget to take the key out of my pocket, it will pop open when I'm 3 feet away and the water hits the area when you're supposed to place your hand to activate the sensor.

Well my hope of the issue self curing was washed away today. I walk within three feet of the front of the car with the key in my pocket and pop it goes. Since the issue is intermittent then something is definitely wrong.

The key or the key fob generates radio waves as far as I know. The battery in them gets weak and the range decreases.
No, it is not a pressure switch. It is a touch sensitive switch that works on changes in capacitance on the surface of the car. Unlike the buttons on the door.

Other cars have this on the door. My BMW, Lexus and VW all do / did, and all could get fooled by the water as it too changes capacitance.

What buttons on the door? Near as I can tell, they're also capacitance switches.

And they don't work as consistently as the ones BMW uses.
