AbrahamF:

I'm enclosing a picture to show that if you connect the charger to the underhood boost connector in the Cayenne, it should work. Here is my charger connected...... lights showing that is working.

Thank you very much. Do you keep the hood closed or take the cables out some other way?

I normally keep the hood closed if it's going to be charging for a long time. In that case, I just pass the cables through the back side of the hood.

When topping off and I just connected for a couple of ours, I just leave the hood open.

Thank you very much. Yes I sometimes keep it for a couple of weeks too if I am flying out. So it's good to know that I can use other options than the cigarette lighter socket.

Hey guys just bought this CTEK lithium for my M3 and then sold the M3 unexpectedly. Will this work on 991.2 GT3 with cigarette adapter?

yeah. it should work. after my Porsche branded charger stopped working, I bought similar model, Time-To-Go and it works well with my 991.2 GTS. I also bought the cigarette adapter so it basically works exactly same as Porsche version.

I would be cautious about using a charger designed for Lithium batteries on a car with an AGM battery? I am for sure no expert, but the AGM has a nominal voltage of 12.6V, with a Lithium being around 13.2, I think. For a CTEK charger I'm not sure the charging voltage would be the same (maybe so?) so it's possible the "level" of charge on an AGM charged with a CTEK Lithium charger might read off? Not sure.

Anyway chargers are certainly cheap enough so as not to break the bank.

Maybe someone else can chime in with more/better info.

The CTEK or any other Chargers have different charging profiles for different battery chemistries. Always best to use the correct charger for the chemistry you have and not mess around. The Lead/Acid is a 6-cell configuration at 12.6v nominal and Lithium is a 4-cell configuration at 13.2v nominal. So some smart chargers send out a pulse that checks resistance and voltage gets that data and charges as it see fit... but its inaccurate if you use the Lead on a Lithium because the chemistries have different voltage and resistance properties. So just use the proper charger for the proper application and you won't have to worry about any issues.

I realize I'm really late to this party but I 100% agree with what Anti-Gravity said. Lithium batteries are charged at a different voltage than lead-acid batteries and that includes AGM batteries. My CTEK 5.0 for AGM and standard flooded cell cost me about $80. The AGM battery in my Cayenne GTS runs around $250 plus a fair amount of labor to get to it if you take to a shop. I would only use the correct charger for my battery. If you no longer need the special Li charger put 'er on eBay to recoup some of your investment and let someone who really needs it benefit from it!

I am familiar with that having worked in a government battery lab.

So if someone with a Lithium battery needs a special charger to charge the battery, how does the car's everyday charging system do when it is set up for something like an AGM.

A cars' system will do just fine (provided it's working as it should) as the lithium batteries generally operate within the same parameters/profile. The difference with a standalone charger for lead/acid compositions(including AGM) is that they have different values for float/maintain as well as desulfation stages which do not properly maintain lithium and can output too much voltage and also possibly over charge.
Best regards,
Chad

Ok so what would the charge algorithm look like for a Li battery charger? I know what it is for my FLA, GEL and AGM.

Care of CTEK, a comparison between lead/acid and lithium model chargers and their charge mode steps and voltage/current output.

You realize that charge voltages on the 991 are as high as 15.0V at about 6C.

Does the BMS on the 991 have an option for a Lithium battery? I know Porsche has a Lithium battery as an option or maybe even standard on an upper end model.
