I'm looking at a GTS being sold through CarMax and have some questions about the warranty. My local dealers don’t seem to want to be any help to welcome another member to the Porsche family so of course I’m turning here. The car I’m looking at has a start date of 4/29/2015. It looks like it was CPO’d sometime after that. Now it’s bejng sold through CarMax. The question is- what warranty comes with this car? Original manufacturers or the CPO?
VIN # WP0AB2A91FS125500 Edit:
The car has 15,000 miles on it. I'm finding that the CarMax warranty would go from purchase date at CarMax for 60 months or 75k, 100k, 125k miles based on which option I choose.
can’t wait to join the family- whether it’s this car or another one. Thank you guys.
I don't know if it's the same Stateside, but in Canada a CPO warranty is void if it is sold by a licensed dealer which is not a Porsche dealer. An individual can sell a CPO car to another individual and the warranty will transfer. I'd call PCA directly for clarification. I'd bet that the car falls under the original warranty. GL.
Build looks sweet!Roger that, I guess I’ll be looking into the CarMax extended warranty... I think they said 5years and 100k miles from purchase date for $2300-$3100 depending on which deductible I choose.
Remember that you have five days to return the car. If you buy it, I would suggest getting a PPI (in this case post) to check the car out. If you search the HFS thread, you'll find some comments where CarMax is keen not to take back the car and will do some of the discovered issues. Best of luck
I actually just checked into something really similar. I called my local dealer about a recent purchase and he said if they didn't do the service he can't look up a VIN and see nationwide what may or may not have been serviced. I don't know if that is true or not but that is what he told me. He did say, if you can track down the servicing Porsche dealership from the CARFAX you can call that dealership and they will give you the information for the VIN if it was done in their shop. So, I did exactly that. When I called the other dealer they confirmed that they had serviced the car and explained what service was done. They did say there are limitations on what they can/can't call tell you. I got enough info to know the yearly service that had occurred so that was some piece of mind for me.
Original warranty will go to April 2019. If the car was a CPO car with all the paperwork I believe that transfers too which would mean CPO warranty to 2021.
CPO's only transfer through a private party purchase or a Porsche dealership purchase, but not through third-party dealerships (like several others have stated). The warranty would only go through April 2019 or 50k miles, whichever comes first (you haven't mentioned how many miles the car has). The CarMax warranty then looks rather pricey for adding just another year in my opinion (unless it has already expired due to mileage)... but your risk tolerance may vary.
Thanks for clarity SR.
Sounds like you will lose the CPO but you still have a full year of original warranty left. I would self insure instead of buying extended put that money aside each month and cover any issues yourself.
Still looks like somewhat conflicting messages as Penn4S says I should get it. I thought I did NOT get it as per several others on here have stated but confused regardless and wanted a dealer on here to help out with clarification. CarMax has offered me a few warranty options all for 60 months from the purchase date from them...
FORMAT:
miles/50 deductible/150 ded/300 ded/500 ded
75k/$3169/$2729/$2349/$2129
100k/$3479/$2969/$2549/$2299
125k/$4899/$4099/$3459/$3059
I plan on using this more than most but not as a DD-I have a motorcycle for that duty. I'm figuring 5-10k per year. Leaning towards one of the 75k options. These are the deductibles I would pay when I take it to a Porsche dealer after the factory warranty runs out...then this one kicks in.
How many miles does the car have on it already? Trying to figure out if the car is already out of warranty or not, which affects the answers somewhat.
Oh, that CarMax car is a garage queen. It is the years that matter. I am amazed that your local P dealer is not willing to check on the maintenance history. Maybe you don't have a "relationship" with them.
You can ask CarMax to show you the maintenance booklet. If it was dutifully maintained, it should show the dealer stamps. Then, just follow the trail and call that (or those) dealers.
I believe CarMax uses a different company than CarFax but they should provide you with some history about the car
