PCM Radio Problems - Common?

A few years ago I purchased a 2015 Cayman S. It had the BOSE radio. After several months of enjoying the radio - mostly using Bluetooth to stream Tidal through my iPhone - suddenly, the radio began turning off (then restarting) by itself. At first I thought this was just a bluetooth connection, however it would do this regularly (every 5-15 minutes). Not only with bluetooth connection, either... it would do it when I played a CD as well.
I went to the dealer, and they were able to witness this. So, they replaced the entire head unit under warranty (I guess a $4,000 part). They suggested I purchase a brand new iPhone and do the "pairing" for the first time with the new head unit and the new phone. I did this, and there was never another problem with the Cayman.
Several months ago I purchased a 2016 991.1 GTS. For a couple of months, there was no problem with the stock radio pairing to my iPhone. Everything was fine - that is, until suddenly the radio shut off and restarted while I was streaming Tidal. (Oh no, not this again.)
I took the 991.1 into the dealer and they kept the car over night. They "reset" the radio and I was able to pair my iPhone and stream Tidal again. This worked for a couple of weeks, then... it started doing this again.
I'll be taking it back to the dealer (which will be my 4th dealer visit overall with both the Cayman and the 999.1.) again. This time, I'll ask that they replace the radio like they did with the Cayman.
So, just wondering....
What is going on with this radio? The sales guy said this is very rare, yet the nice lady service advisor told me that this was very common.
Anyone have similar experiences?

I had a similar problem on my 2015 981. They updated the PCM software to version 4.76 which is the latest and I have not had the problem since. What software version are you using?

I was going to post about this but didn't get around to it. I took mine out on Sunday for a drive through lovely country roads and TWICE the PCM turned on my iPod. I thought perhaps it was a loose connection but it didn't appear to be so.

I have a similar problem. My PCM was replaced after the first one stopped functioning in the navigator and map screens. The replacement unit was fine for a while but sometimes will randomly turn off and then turn back on. I told my friendly service advisor and he said that it was because I had too many contacts in my phone that were synced to the unit. 1100 Contacts. Nothing was done and I got a new phone in the interval. We'll see what happens when I wake it up from the winter slumber.

have a very similar problem where the PCM doesnt recognize my phone (calls it an ipod) and therefore does not let me access the forward, back buttons and generally doesnt show data or anything on my multifuntion display. my work around was just linking it up via AUX BT but that is not satisfactory. waiting to take it in when i do my 20k service

Had similar issue with PCM switching off on its own with my 997 cs.Never bother fixing it back then, as it was happening intermittently and rarely. Work out was to restart the car.
So far no issues with two 991.1s (29013 and 2015).

SWV 4.76 DVD part #WKD-952-800-17. You can get this from the dealer for about $20 and update it yourself. Just put the disc in and follow the prompts. Dealer may do it for free, but probably not.
You can also press the INFO?SOURCE button together to learn alll sorts of things about your PCM history and status.

Anybody know what V4.76 actually updates and what the benefits are. I assume the update will benefit carplay more than anything else.

Do a google search for the update CD part number. First couple links all selling the disc for under a buck.

for 24 cents, not sure if it is even worth it to even buy to update
I am assuming that for that price, there really is not much there that is important to update and that no discernible difference will be seen

This happened to my 2015 carerra, It started when the GPS stopped working--for a few months i was driving through the Gulf of Mexico. Then the unit started randomly crashing and restarting. It was replaced under warranty and the tech told me that it's a common problem.
