Default Am I too weird to wish that my 991.1 had...

Sometimes I think my 991.1S is a little too big. I remember how nice was the size of my prior Boxster 987. I find the front end of the 981 a bit fudge.

Sooo? I wish I could get the size of the 981 with both the front end look and engine of the 991.1S, with the 6 speed transmission.

Well, maybe the upcoming GT4 may solve that

My wife has a minivan so the 911 feels pretty small to me. Can't even see it in the garage!

I purchased my first 911 in 1970. If you think your 991 is large, park it next to an early vintage 911 and you'll think that you are driving a bus.

Just think that the longer 991 also gives you much better handling. Our other car is a Lexus RX 450h so my 991.2 seems tiny in comparison, and with RWS the car functions like a shorter car in parking lots and such.

I came from a Jag XKR and daily drive a 5 series. Love the tight size of my 991.

OP, I know you were addressing the size difference of the 987 and the 991, but on the subject of the 991 feeling bigger, here is an excerpt from the post I made a while back on the 997 forum when some where talking about how big the 991 was compared to the 997. The stats where even surprising to me since I've had both and expected the 991 to be bigger in comparison than it is:

The 991.1 is the same width and slightly shorter in height than the 997. The 991 is a tad lighter, weighing in a 56 pounds less in narrow-body form.

Yes, it is 1.2 inches longer (0.7% longer) but that alone I think most would have trouble seeing the difference. I think it is the 4 inch longer wheelbase and the 20" wheels that make it look bigger perhaps, but the longer wheelbase brings improved ride and stability and the suspension is tuned to handle the 20" wheels just fine.

You can argue the aesthetics of design details all you want, but I don't think the arguments about it being a bigger beast are correct unless you think 0.7% longer validates that side of the argument. Then I'd argue that being slightly shorter and lighter makes it smaller. Here are the real stats:

997.2: Width: 71.2 (72.9 wide body) Length: 175.6 Height: 51.2 Wheelbase: 92.5 Curb Weight: 3131 (3157 wide body)
991.1: Width: 71.2 (72.9 wide body) Length: 176.8 Height: 51.0 Wheelbase: 96.5 Curb Weight: 3075 (3153 wide body)

One of the reasons I went with a 911 is it is larger and more comfortable than a Cayman.

The physical spice difference is not enough to matter, particularly IN the car as most of this .07 inch was used to effectively push the engine forward. The perception of a larger Cabin is perdomenantly due to the superior design which was light years in modernization; I won’t say improvement since many do prefer the traditional layout. I’ll likely be a curmudgeon and like the 991 layout better than the 992 based on the spy pics.

991 too big for you? The 997 is an excellent and iconic car. Get that. But really get a 996 if you REALLY want smaller and rawer in the modern, water cooled range. No I’m not kidding

Interesting figures. It does seem the wheelbase is what gives it such a larger presence (as well the more "flushed" design). Longer wheelbase is bittersweet: The length gives it more stability and comfort, yet a short wheel base is SO instrumental in making a car feel like a compact go-kart. Having the wheels feel like they're right under you is a great way to feel connected to a car, especially in knowing exactly where the wheels are (like you're literally "running" aka like the car is an extension of you). It's that short wheelbase of the 997 alone that makes people feel it's so much smaller and lighter than the 991, when in fact the 991 is lighter.

Then again, the 991 wheelbase is still pretty short in the grand scheme (as it should be) and the Cayman/Boxster has a longer wheelbase, and through its more compact otherwise size, feels like a go-kart compared to a 911. As with everything, it's all about striking the right balance.

To O/P, I'd say a Cayman, especially any GT4 would be exactly what you're looking for.

As with all things they are ultimately a compromise, stability and all the benefits of a longer wheelbase have the obvious size detriments. I do however think that with rear wheel steering and electronics the inherent qualities of a less stable smaller platform can be managed. Think of fighter planes, unplayable without electronics. But I suspect we will love the dynamics but perhaps reject with more discontent about lack of driver control and lack of feel.

The other thing that seriously affects size is crash protection regulations. For me Porsche should shrink the car a little, bring the weight back to nearer 1300kg or even better 1200kg

Fibre optic wiring looms, more plastic, thinner clever glass, more carbon and aluminium and continued evolution of the remarkable suspension please.

PS is the 997.2 width really the same as a 991 ?
PPS My old and much missed 964RS now looks a little small ! In it's day it 'looked' right

The 981 and 991 aren't that different in size length-wise, so are you referring to width or another dimension? (Or are you specifically referring to cabin size?)

My #1 complaint about the 991 is the size. There's nothing that can be done to improve the feel of a big car. I have several 911's and possibly the most significant reason the air-cooled cars feel so much more engaging to drive, IMHO, is the smaller size. Porsche traded that special driving feeling for Nurburgring times.

LexVan—That is a gorgeous Speedster. I built a model of a yellow one when I was young and have wanted one since.
