Default What *4* things about your 991 are most important, enjoyable and desirable to you?

If you could select 4 things that you like MOST about your 991, separated OR combined into enjoyment and desirability, or that you find most important toward your day to day ownership experience, what would they be?

Mine, in no particular order:

Handling. (enjoy, but being that I have PASM, ideally would desire just ONE stiffer suspension setting)

Sound. (completely enjoy)

Driver to Car Connection. (enjoy, but also desire more)

Design. (completely enjoy)

If I had to pick a 5th, I'd say "Chassis Balance." Only reason I didn't select that is I don't find it to be one of the 911's strongest suits (drive a Boxster/Cayman and you'll see why). Yet I think it's that "lopsided" feeling of a rear engine which is one of the best elements of a 911 in terms of giving the car a "language of its own" and character, and livens up enthusiastic drives. But it's more a character, versatility and performance enhancement (in the sense of grip, braking, interior space compared to a mid engine car, etc.) advantage.

I hear this a lot.

I track the heck out of my various 991's (GT3, RS, .2 S) and prior to those I had a GT4. Maybe it's just seat time and personal taste but I think the 991 handles way better than the GT4. It seems less likely to spin - I say this based on spinning the Cayman multiple times. I'm no expert but I strongly prefer the 991 on the track to the 981.

Oh totally. The 991 certainly grips and handles better than a C/B. But I guess I mean that the "balance" of the C/B is so neutral and compass like. The 911 is definitely more challenging yet rewarding. But on a track, 911's always have the advantage.

So hard to pick just four since it is a car that can do a lot of things very well!

Design (always liked 911s but fell in love with the sexy shape of the 991)
Braking (simply amazing)
Acceleration (love a quick car)
Comfort and refinement (a car you can daily drive or take on long trips)

I would have added driver to car connection as it really makes the 911 unique - it drives differently than anything else.
Also, these are missing but are important to me:

Reliability
History/legacy

Performance (all aspects)
Quality
Usability/practicality (for an "exotic" car)
Overall comfort
That great flat six
The historical reputation of Porsche

Yeah, I should’ve added reliability. Maybe separated “refinement” and “comfort” too, as some people like a raw and quirky car that’s also refined (comfort and refinement can be mutually exclusive).

As for history/heritage, I forgot that as well. BUT, I figure that’s #1 for ALL of us, otherwise we’re not true 911 enthusiasts . The bloodline running through these cars is what makes them everything that they are. Period. Damn skippy.

It's nice seeing Porsche tied for 1st in the latest JDPower results over a 3 year period.

Handling/grip
braking
acceleration
driver/connection

Chassis balance comes out in handling and grip and the 4 items listed here will deliver a fast lap. Perplexed by the Boxster Cayman comments - The 981GT4 and 718S outhandle the 991.2 base. It is only the addition of RAS the puts the .2 series ahead of the 718S/GT4 in that regard. The 981GTS and 991.2 base are a wash with the base being quicker round a track due to tqe/hp advantage. The 718S/GTS is a very, very good car.

*Caveat, I would add the rear suspension in the 911, at high speeds on poor pavement, is much more accomodating and keeps the car better balanced through compressions (and retains better grip) - when I say high speed I mean above 100mph.

I blindly filled in my top 4 for why I like my 911 (without doing the poll) but I found it interesting when I did the same exercise for my 981. Two totally different cars

991.2
I like the way it looks. It's ageless and classy.
I love the history of the 911. It is the Porsche Icon. A 930 Poster was in my room as a kid.
It screams status and success.
It is highly refined.

981
IT MAKES ME FEEL ALIVE. I love driving this car!
It is on rails.
Naturally aspirated screamer w/PSE right behind your ears. Man!
It looks like a Baby Carrera GT. It just looks friggin fantastic! Sometimes, I go out to the garage with a glass of wine just to stare at the awesomeness for a while.

Your comments are interesting. A mid-engine is always going to handle better than a rear engine car though. That is why every F1, Le Mans and super car is a mid-engine. The last 911 to win Le Mans was a GT1 - a mid-engine 911. The mid-engine cars wont brake as well or accelerate as well coming out of turns but overall, it is a better handling car. Your experience is likely a reflection of the better suspension of the 3/RS and not the engine placement. I routinely drive my 981 and 991.2 back to back on the same circuit and the 981 handles better overall. As for spinning, you are spot on. Once the mid-engine cars break loose, they spin like a top. The 911s are much easier to correct out of a spin because the "mass moment of inertia" works in your favor to correct the spin with only mild driver input.

Edit: I just read RRDnA's comments and I agree.

Amazing! I can totally relate in the sense that I get and can imagine exactly what you’re saying and how you feel. I REALLY wanted a 981 Cayman GTS. It’s perfection to me, and 981’s are instant classics. But it was the headroom and that lifelong “poster on my wall / always dreamed of owning it” panache of the 911 that lured me in. Also, that iconic 911 design and coupe greenhouse.... I NEEDED it! Although the C/B’s are stunning pieces of art. A 981 with the visceral N/A screamer and .2 911 with the effortlessness comfort/refinement seems like a perfect combo.

As for handling. Perhaps I should clarify as well. Pure street handling, i.e not at the limit, the 718 Boxster S (base suspension) I had for a bit handles much more neutrally and sprightly, tossably, on-rails and fun than my .1 C2 with PASM, H&R’s, PTV+, 12” wide HRE’s and S/C (dynamic engine mounts make it a handling option too).

BUT, when pushed hard, the level of grip the 911 brings is tremendous. Certainly more so, and certainly higher limits. So handling feel and how fast I can go through a turn is different here. A lot also has to do with how Porsche engineers more grip into the already grip-ideal rear engine setup, by giving us wide wheels that the C/B don’t get.

I also remember tbe video where they rested a 981 Boxster S with all the handling options on track against a base 991.1 with no handling options and base wheels. Although the Boxster even looked more fun to drive and neutral on track, the 911 turned better times and stats everywhere.

So I think the C/B with *equal suspension options* handles better in the sense of fun, ease, nimbleness, and eagerness to carve a corner like a scalpel. But I imagine Porsche will always ensure the equal 911 outfit will push better technical numbers (who cares when it comes to street or enjoyment driving). Though, of course; the C/B platform is inherently capable of a lot more than Porsche give it.

Anyway, I still crave the C/B drive. My 911 feels like a fun and visceral sports car.... until I drive a 981 or 718. Then it feels like a luxury car with a riveting sounding engine.
