991s or 997s, best value

997 got a two major upgrades, universally lauded, at update time: 9A1 motor and PDK (over tiptronic). So, while I don't know the actual stats of .1 vs. .2, it seems logical that 2nd half 997 sales were stronger than first.

Maybe another way to frame the problem: You might save a bit of money, but you'll never get back the miles or the years that a newer 911 will give you.
I was in the same boat last summer, deciding between a 2007 C2S cabriolet with manual or a 2013 C2 cabriolet with manual. I went with the latter because for another $14 K, it got me a Porsche that was 6.5 years newer, with 20K less miles on the clock. With no IMS or bore scoring issues and without having to put in a quart of oil every 2 months (ok, i know that's within parameters based on research here, but it was just one more issue in the negative column for the 997)
The rest of the story is that I bought the 991, and had it ready to ship from Texas to Stuttgart, where I'm stationed. It was set to roll onto a ship on August 25. Well that's also the day Hurricane Harvey decided to roll through. Long story short, USAA declared it a flood loss and I walked away from the settlement with a bit of a profit. I rolled that into the 991 C2 cab I now have here in Stuttgart and am looking forward to the Nordschleife reopening this Spring.
WP0CA2A9XDS140103 is the VIN of the other Porsche 911 that was totalled. It's sitting in a field somewhere west of Houston awaiting flood auction....from the pictures they haven't even bothered to roll up the windows....sad.
