Default CTEK Chargers

Anyone use an extension cord with their CTEK charger/maintainer, or Porsche branded one? I'm moving and the wall outlet in new garage is further away from my car than current house, and I might need an extension cord. I just ordered from CTEK the 8 ft extension for the red and black cable that goes to the 12 V adapter plug in car, and hopefully that will be enough length.

But CTEK says in underlined print in the manual for the Model 3300, to not use an extension cord to connect the maintainer to the wall outlet, which of course is not what the 8 ft extension I ordered is used for. I don't see why it would matter as long as the extension cord gauge wire is large enough for the amp draw. Anyone use an extension cord and have any issues?

I think the extension you are talking about is fine....I have one on mine and it works fine. I think they are likely talking about an extension cord between the wall plug and your Ctek.

I use the CTEK 8-foot as well, no issues.

I use an old-school Porsche charger. I use the cigarette lighter. FYI. I think the thin cord on the maintainer is about 20 ft long, if that helps. In an old off-site storage facility, I used an extention cord for a few years with zero issues.

Yes, I'm sure the extension I mentioned I had ordered is fine. I was asking about a regular extension cord that runs from the CTEK unit to the wall outlet. That's what CTEK says not to use.

Yeah. It's a CYA statement from CTEK. For long runs I'd use a heavier duty extension cord, but the maximum charging current is about 4A depending on the model.

As others have said, no problems with extension cords. Pick the right one. I have an indoor-outdoor cord that bough from Home Depot.

The cable between the box and the car is essentially a lamp cord. That tells me that these things don't draw much power. Their warning not to use an extension cord is for fear that someone might use a really crummy extension cord, and perhaps one that's not grounded. If you use a good extension cord, you'll be OK. One of those orange outdoor extension cords is probably overkill, but it is what I'd probably default to because that's what I use in my garage.

If you're using the red/black CTEK extension cord (from the CTEK to the cigarette lighter socket), you should be fine. If you're talking about a conventional extension cord (from wall outlet to CTEK) then if you read the CTEK manual for the current/latest models (available online as PDF on their website) they say the following:

An extension cord should not be used unless absolutely
necessary. Use of improper extension cord could result
in a risk of fire and electric shock. If an extension cord
must be used, make sure that: a) Pins on plug of extension
cord are the same number, size and shape as those
of plug on charger; b) Extension cord is properly wired
and in good electrical condition; and c) Wire size is large
enough for AC ampere rating of charger as specified
in “RECOMMENDED MINIMUM AWG SIZE FOR AC
EXTENSION CORDS”.

RECOMMENDED MINIMUM AWG SIZE FOR AC EXTENSION CORDS

LENGTH OF CORD FEET (M) | AWG SIZE OF CORD
  • 25 ft (7.6m): 18 gauge
  • 50 ft (15.2m): 18 gauge
  • 100 ft (30.5m): 18 gauge
  • 150 ft (45.6m): 16 gauge
