Here's the install I did on my 2008 Boxster of the 9500ci. It was a lot of work to put it in.

I got popped in a rental car up in Cville. Normally when I travel to VA I will even bring a travel radar detector with me for rental cars but I figured it was a short trip. I was going 55 in a 45 which was around a $250 ticket so worth fighting. Contacted 3 lawyers in town and no one would touch it. Florida is so easy, you pay the ticket clinic $75 and it automatically disappears.
I really hate in this story that my tax dollars are going to house and feed someone who was doing 90mph on a deserted back road and even worse small time drug offenders. Such a waste.

Only good thing in Charlottesville regarding traffic cops, knock on wood, is they are very tolerant of VA cars without the front plate attached. Other parts of the Commonwealth, not so much. The magnetic front license plate holder comes in handy.

I did contact Nick about this but he said he no longer sends out ‘kits’. That’s a shame as I am pretty mechanically adept and I don’t think I’d have a problem installing the system. I did see an authorized dealer will sell the installed Max CI 360 in the box, but only in their store in another state that’s a long way from here. Going back to Nick, I bet I could talk him into selling the ashtray controller mount if I can get my hands on a remote system.
I just saw that Escort is coming out with a new installed system which includes shifters, the Escort iX Ci, and will be priced under $1k. I’ll take a look at it when it hits the street, although it is a dealer installed system only (but I bet there will b a way to skin that cat). I’ll keep the Uniden and try to find a way to use it in the meantime in the 911, plus will use it when I take long trips in my Rice Rocket SUV.

There are alternatives to a remote Escort. Do a google search and read reviews on others. Personally, not a fan of Escort, but do your own research and find what fits your needs and price point. Good place to start is:

I think it is, and even if it's not I don't think they'd stop you for this. Lots of cars have a black dot matrix at the top of the windshield which would be perfect, but not Porsche. The tint strip would prob work. Thanks for the suggestion.

This thread has been very informative for me and I really appreciate all of the comments. I have switched gears, and while I will keep the Uniden R3 for long trips in other vehicles we own, I am now taking a very close look at the AL Priority installed system with integrated front and rear Net Radar radar antennas. If I go this route I will do the installation my self and total cost will be around $3k. Not for the faint of heart, but neither is the thought of spending a few days in a slammer somewhere in Virginia.
FWIW, back when I got my license when I was in high school (a LONG time ago), the Virginia law was 2 speeding tickets in one year, even if you got nailed for only 5 mph over, resulted in loss of license for 6 months. Now we are on a point system which is a lot better, but still have the sucky reckless driving law for 20 over or 80+.

I do spend lot of time in VA as I have family in the area. I used to use V1, but these days it just collects dust. Not worth it to have it in VA and DC. I believe you can't even have in your car in DC. Yes, if you speed over a certain amount in VA; you will go to jail. I just cruise now and if I need to have spirited drive, I drive to other states anyway. In Northern Virginia, the speed limit is little lenient but outside the NoVA area, it is strict
Not having a radar in the car, has reduced all the tension and anxiety on my end. I drive quite peacefully now.

80 mph in So Cal is (maybe) keeping up with traffic - when things are moving, that is...from 10 pm to 5 am. I know a guy who lives in So Cal and was visiting VA. He was going 80+ in his Subaru rental car. Was not arrested but it was a huge PITA for him. Required lots of dough and hiring of an attorney who had an in with the VA powers that be. Also required him returning to VA for a court date, etc, etc. Take home message: Don't go over 80 in VA unless you have a radar detector and are willing to roll the dice!

Just a thought....keep the $ 3K in your pocket and use it for track days. Then keep your speeds reasonable on the street 15 to 19 mph over will just get you a regular speeding ticket. If you are polite, fess up and be somewhat honest with the guy then I have found every VA cop I have been pulled over by will agree to downgrade it to "Failure to Obey a Traffic Sign" which is a non-moving, no points, $ 100 fine. Once you do track days, then speeding on the street really does lose its appeal. I haven't had a "real" speeding ticket in many years but I have asked cops for the downgrade on three occasions and they have accomodated my request, probably because I'm not coming off as lying, arrogant ***** to them.
$ 3K buys a lot of track time and its WAY more fun that slaloming through old Corollas on the congested roads we have in Virginia.
