How to Hide a Radar Detector
I live in the Police state of Virginia, where 20 mph over the speed limit or 80+ is wreckless driving. Either will definitely cost you an attorney and a huge fine plus court costs. And possibly jail time. I am careful when and where I exceed the speed limit and use Waze, but Waze is not enough. So I ordered a Uniden R3 radar detector (radar detectors are illegal in ol Virginny too), so I selected the R3 as apparently they are undetectable by radar detector detectors which the police use here. What a bunch of cat and mouse bs! So anyway, was wondering what folks do to conceal a windshield mount radar detector. I don’t see many options in a 911 coupe but maybe I am overlooking the obvious. Don’t want to invest in a custom installation as the technology changes so quickly that what you have is soon to be obsolete. Thanks in advance for suggestions.

I have a blend mount.
At least it keeps it off the windshield.

The only way to really hide the detector is to invest in a custom remote system. I wouldn't worry about systems becoming obsolete too quickly. StiR+ has been around for years and years and it is still one of the top performers. Although it has now been phased out, you should still be able to get it at a pretty decent price. Also, if the VA police use lasers, then a radar detector will pretty much be useless.

Remember that you'll ideally need to select a detector that has no signal emissions so you can't be picked up by a radar detector detector, like the VG-2 and the Spectre. There are very few options... one is the Escort Redline. It also has a Dark Mode to help visually conceal it. If you can find a good way to attach it tightly to the interior roof lining or visor it might be hard to see due to the low height of our cars.
I had an officer stop me in Virginia after detecting mine many years ago. He threatened to confiscate my detector even though I had an out-of-state car and license, but ended up letting me go since I was fairly near to the border and heading out of state on the interstate. I couldn't have blamed him if he did since I knew about this, but I certainly appreciated him letting me keep it.

Blend Mount does seem like the best since there are no visible suction dots on the windshield while driving.

Do people in your state really go to jail for driving 81? That sounds crazy, and I thought we had it bad in CA.

There are other options to a mount:
Move.
Track.
Speed in closest state with reasonable fines.
Marry the right judges daughter.
Can't imagine many real car guys wanting to stay there long.

80 mph in So Cal is (maybe) keeping up with traffic - when things are moving, that is...from 10 pm to 5 am. I know a guy who lives in So Cal and was visiting VA. He was going 80+ in his Subaru rental car. Was not arrested but it was a huge PITA for him. Required lots of dough and hiring of an attorney who had an in with the VA powers that be. Also required him returning to VA for a court date, etc, etc. Take home message: Don't go over 80 in VA unless you have a radar detector and are willing to roll the dice!

In Virginia its Reckless driving at 20 mph over, which gets moved from traffic court to a 3rd class misdemeanor (conviction means a criminal offense). While you *can* go to jail, its not usually done at that speed, but is at say 105 mph, just as Jason Werth (Pro ball player for Washington Nationals) who was doing that driving on an entrance ramp on the interstate in his GT3 RS He spent 5 days in jail.

What happens in Virginia (this goes for you out-of-staters, too) you get popped for speed via Reckless driving at 80 / 85 perhaps as high as 90 and you go lawyer up. Your attorney will plea bargain your case with the local DA the day of the hearing and you get downgraded to Improper Driving, a traffic offense with 3 points that has a $ 100 fine + court costs. Add the $ 500 to your attorney of choice. That's pretty routine.
As for the radar detectors, the only sure way is a full hidden unit, which I installed in my prior Porsche. It was a big job to do it right, four nights in the garage and a lot of interior and bumper parts on the floor. Virginia cops do confiscate radar detectors so its good to have a trash one in the car you can hand to him if you get lit up by a Trooper running a Vindicator unit in his prowler. Anything on the dash, they will get you sooner or later.
