Once members of a population have made up their mind that ‘X must be true’ it is only a small fraction of that population that have a capacity to change their mind under any circumstances. Typically whatever ‘gets there first’ sticks even if it is later demonstrated to be verifiably, obviously false. The more complex and expensively-delivered a contrary explanation is, the more the population in question will be convinced that attempts to change their minds are a cover-up or conspiracy by some other population.

(And for those for whom the above ‘X’ is new information: I’m not making this up. Peer-reviewed and replicated research has been conducted as far back as the 1960s. And there are PLENTY of examples lying around today for those that pay attention.)
