It is not like the line is only open 28 hours a week! It is shift work.

Maybe, but who would you rather build your 911?

The 28 hour workweek STG posted is metalworkers. Porsche assembly workers went from 34 to 35 hours as part of the 2015 contract amendment.

wareaglescott, i was referring to the personnel investment. that is generally any large organization's single greatest investment and cost.

Definitely. There were multiple causes. But bottom line, a Japanese car and American car with the same sticker price were very different in terms of quality, and that was largely because the American company's labor costs were significantly higher. This is from NPR, hardly an anti-union outfit:

https://www.npr.org/templates/story/...oryId=98643230

An hour of labor at a U.S. auto plant costs around $74, while the same hour of work at a Toyota or Honda plant is closer to $50. That $24 difference is cited as one reason Detroit has had trouble competing in the car market. Take-home pay is comparable, averaging around $29 per hour for GM, Chrysler and Ford, and around $27 an hour for the Japanese manufacturers.

But, as part of their contract agreements with the United Auto Workers, the Detroit Three also pay the cost of health care for life for their retirees, along with a generous pension package.

Those retiree "legacy costs" mean an extra $16-$18 per hour in costs compared to the $3 per hour that the Japanese automakers spend in retiree benefits, according to the Oliver Wyman consulting firm that publishes the Harbour Report, a labor productivity analysis for car manufacturers.

Have not the slightest idea what is normal and what is not for German workers, and how outrageous or how reasonable their demands are. Good for them for making a stand and fighting for fairness, or shame on them for getting greedy/being unreasonable. Since I am not educated on the subject I'm not going to cast judgment either way, even if it impacts me (my GT3 is scheduled to enter production soon).

If, *if*, you have to wait get a $120k+ car a couple weeks later I think there are much, much bigger problems in the world...

Overall there are many angles to these issues.

Big picture? None of our concerns and PAG's headache. If they can't provide value in what they sell, they lose. If they can, they win. So far lately, they're on a winning streak. For what, the last 7-8 yrs?

One of the articles linked above (http://www.businesstimes.com.sg/ener...r-28-hour-week), although it has a clickbait title about 28 hour weeks, more clearly states that the union is "demanding the right for workers to temporarily switch to a 28-hour week to care for children or elderly relatives". It doesn't give the details (such as how long that temporarily shortened workweek can last) but that's a far more reasonable demand than the "assume they are all slackers" interpretation that this thread seems to favor.

The more interesting demand is the desire for a 6% raise vs. the offered 2% raise. 6% does sound a little high - but that's just the opening play and they'll meet in the middle somewhere.

Got an email notification with what your original post said. Nice. Really makes us Americans look good. It seems like coming from nothing via hard work has unfortunately not taught you humility and tact. Ironic considering you are talking about employees who build the very cars that are the reason we joined this enthusiast community in the first place.

I too think my original response was crass. That is why I edited it.

However, don't mistake my lack of tact for a lack of humility.

People deserve to improve their quality of life, but not at the expense of others.
