Am a happy 4GTS owner here. Thought with four full seasons where I live I felt the 4WD would be the way to go. I’m incredibly pleased so far and the red bar is sweet.
I track my car pretty often and im sure the 4WD saves me from driver error on many occasions 😄
I live in So Cal - no need for 4 wheel drive for obvious reasons. Not to say that some don't opt for it anyway. Further, some - myself included - opted for a GTS in part because it is the only platform in which you can get the wide hips without a 4 wheel drive. As for the rear light bar, there is a way to modify the non-4 wheel drive rear grill to a light bar - I have seen it done here on RL - but the actual wiring harness implementation of this remains a mystery.
I drove the C2S and C4S back-to-back at a PEC before finalising my GTS order and preferred the handling of the 4, especially the way it came out of a tight turn under power. I also thought it would help pulling out onto unexpectedly greasy roundabouts and the like plus the light bar is a really nice design feature. No regrets so far...
I, too, was set on getting a Targa this time. It’s been three weeks since I took delivery and I am very happy with it. I have been surprised that it feels lighter and smaller than my most recent (2015 TTS) prior 911, although they are both AWD and the heaviest two versions, if memory serves.
I prefer the feel over my prior C2S, although it was great fun to drive. You can’t go wrong with any of these cars, which is part of the beauty of it.
