Voice Control worse than ever

When I was doing walk through on my 911 yesterday, my salesperson told me the voice control on the left of the steering wheel only works when apple CarPlay is connected. It’s not voice control for the car, but voice control for the iPhone just like when you talking to Siri. Is this true?

Agreed, it is a stand alone option and clearly documented in the manual. Thanks macanakey, it's a relief that even though it is rubbish, I'm not missing out on free rubbish. I'm going to the garage now to rearrange the contents of my passenger footwell luggage net.
