Default Outdoor Car covers

I will need to park my car outside for a while (Secure but uncovered) and wondered if there might be any recommendations for car covers that can be put on and taken off outside, probably once or twice a week. My car is a 991.1 GTS

Never cover a dirty car. I wouldn't worry about it. Have a good wax/sealant/coating on the car, and use a sun shade for the windsheild. If cabriolet, use RaggTopp.

I'm with Lex on this one. Unless both car and cover are clean the cover itself will do more harm than good. This style is convenient and really effective

It is correct that you should not place a cover on a dirty car. I assume you already know that. The current Porsche outdoor cover is excellent. It is lightweight and has an attached storage bag. You simply put the bag on top of the car and attach a tab to the windshield, unzip the bag and unfold the cover on to the car. You then simply reverse the process to remove the cover. Works very well.

I've never used a cover, so I have no proof of anything. However, I'd do my best to avoid one. When you consider you can get swirl marks simply washing & drying your car, then a cover would seem to be prime candidate to do the same. I might not worry as much with a white car, but the darker the color the bigger the visual risk.

Default car cover

I had to cover a car outside (although in a carport) for a while in Virginia and the following worked like a champ. Buy the 100 ft roll of visqueen from Home depot. Cut so that it hits the ground on all sides of the clean car you are covering. Then put a couple of old blankets on top of that to absorb moisture. Then on top of that use your normal outdoor car cover. The system works so well that even dust will not get on the car. You will need ssome bricks or wood to hold the visqueen down I would anchor on at least 6 points.

Sorry for the silly question, but if you put a car cover on a dirty car, what's the risk exactly? Scratches I'm assuming? And does the very act of pulling the cover on/off the car, cause the scratches?

I've been using California Car Cover Superweaves for years on several cars with great success. They are compact, lightweight, do not trap moisture, and can be machine-washed. I've had to return a few for warraty replacement as they had become thread bare and started to tear. Better the cover than the car. They're not cheap at $300 but then neither is the car.

Not a silly question. If the car is dirty, the dirt or dust particulates become "grit" just like very fine sandpaper. The movement of putting the cover on and off the car can cause micro scratches in the paint surface. If the car sits in the wind, the problem is magnified. It's not a horrible thing but certainly something you probably want to avoid.

Good post. In addition, you now have a dirty underside of the cover, only to exacerbate the issue the next go-around with the cover and the outdoor elements.

That makes a lot of sense, thank you both! Also didn't think about the wind effect either. If I get a car cover, it will be for indoor use, so probably a not an issue, but I see why the dirt can cause problems.

If you want to see some awesome indoor covers, look at Carnewal. What I really like about them is the ability to select a color other than the standard Porsche silver and still get the Porsche crest on the hood area. Ask for the Rennlist discount. Gert is the owner, and a regular Rennlist poster.

Awesome, thanks for the reference! I wonder if they can make it without the large Porsche logo on the hood?
