My .1 GTS is coming up on its 2nd oil change. Car was produced Nov 2015. I changed my oil at 750 miles Dec 2016. I'm currently at 2200 miles 1 year later and it is telling me to change it but given the amount I've driven, is it really necessary? Dealer said it is up to me but it would mess with the service intervals but said it didn't make sense to change given I drove it ~1500 miles on this oil. What would you guys do?

 

Once a year is good practice to flush out anything that may have built up in your oil.
The oil is probably still very good given the low miles, but the next buyer will expect that the
basic maintenance has been followed.

OIl should be changed every 10,000 miles or 1 year, whichever comes first.

 

Oil changes are both time based and usage based as mentioned above. The oil breaks down (even synthetic) and becomes contaminated with particles and moisture over time. You should change your oil IAW the manual recommendations.

 

I change mine about once a year on the anniversary of when I bought it and I put about 4000 miles a year on it. If I am a month or two late I don’t sweat it.

I don't think so. The OP changed his oil at the one year point (but only had 750 miles on it) as scheduled.

My advice to the OP is to drive your car more. Cars need to be run to remain healthy.

 

Ah yes. But I would not do a 2nd change at 2200. To me not worth the time, money or carbon footprint.

Good points, I do need to drive it more. Was away a lot in 2017 but should be able to rack up the miles in 2018

 

Trouble is the engine and engine oil don't care about that. 2200 miles a year suggests lots of short trips. The oil is probably pretty loaded with contaminates. An oil change is the only way to get rid of these.

If you let the oil change go while you avoid spending the time, money and don't create a large carbon footprint now you risk facing all this multiplied by who knows what size of a factor in the future if the engine should develop an internal problem due to not following an oil change schedule that works to prolong the engine's service life. Skimping on proper servicing of one of these cars/engines is the worst form of economizing.

 

On the other hand, since the OP said he'd been away a lot maybe the usage was such that the engine always fully warmed up and any condensation was burned off. Mobil 1, like other synthetics, is good for much more than 1000 miles between changes, since there's little likelihood of damaging contaminants other than condensation at that mileage. I would tell OP to evaluate his usage, and if he typically drove the car more than 10 miles each time he used it, and oil temperature reached full operating temperature, he could probably go another year. At one point, the manual was recommending 2 year, 20,000 mile intervals. With quality oil, and avoidance of short trip driving especially in colder climates, it may be heresy to say this, but the change interval can be extended without consequence.

 

Mobil 1 is good for 20,000 but you dont want to leave it in the car for years either. I think the 1 year rule is pretty reasonable. Same with brake fluid, the fluid is still good, but they want to change it every 2 years because of condensation in the system.
