Turned the key to start the car..........turned over, cranked as normal but wouldn’t start. After about 3 times cycling the key it started but wouldn’t stay running. It did this about 4-5 times. No codes, nothing. Then suddenly on the next try it started and now running normal. 3/4 tank of fuel. Had driven earlier in morning as normal.
Anyone experience this? Very strange. Thanks for any help.

Bad gas? When did you gas up last?


Is A L L your maintenance up to date? Everything? What was the last thing touched on the car recently?

 

Confirm you do not touch/pump accelerator when starting car?

 

Sorry.....2013 C2S 42K due to go in for 40K service. Using shell 91 gas. Never touched the accelerator.

 

Battery low? Spark plugs? Bizarre.

My car did this once for the previous owner. They reflashed the DME and sent him on his way.

It has done it once for me too, although it never caught and died. Would just crank and crank with no attempt to even fire. Called roadside assist, and they were on the way when I got it to start, run, and stop and restart normally. Very odd.

One thing that they did for the previous owner was replace the crankshaft position sensor due to a "rough running on cold start" concern. Not sure if they are related. It's been fine ever since (spring this year) and the car goes in next week and I will have them look for codes.

 

Sounds like a classic crank position sensor problem, which was somewhat common a while back.

 

I'd also get the battery checked. I had a faulty battery a while back and it exhibited similar symptoms.

 

Took it in yesterday and my SA pal had it checked for codes etc..... of course NADA! Battery good. Asked about crank sensor to shop foreman and he said it could be the cause but should have thrown a code. Taking it in for 40K next month so he’ll take it off and look at replacing. They are so busy right now....it would be a week. Just hope it doesn’t do it again soon. Weird! Thanks as always for the help.
