hum, not necessarily true. It depends on the track.

If you want a more powerful motor, BGB Motorsports will sell you a Stage 1 for $10k (415/330 crank),
or for another $20k you can get Stage 2 (installed price including R&R motor) and that gives you the OEM X51 kit for the 3.8. Nets 445hp, 340 tq at crank)
or for another $17,500, they'll stroke it to 4.0 liters, yielding 470/360.
Expensive hp, but the Stage I and II is no more than getting the equivalent X51 in a 991 GTS.
If you exclude options
991.1 GTS MSRP $115k with 430/325
981 GT4 MSRP $85k with 385/310
GT4 Stage II $115k with 445/340
Not a bad deal at all for the person who laments the absence of the X51 3.8 in the GT4. When my warranty's gone I'll look at this solution for sure. I LOVED the power delivery on my Carrera GTS.

But, whatever it is we'll know soon enough I suppose. I personally have only an academic interest in it.

Ha!
Seriously though, they could pry some more money out of me if
a) GT3 motor, even smaller and/or detuned to 450hp
b) somehow make it look better to me. I honestly don't have any idea how they'd do that. Since I first saw this photo in 2012
I've been a goner for the 981. After 15 years of the Boxster/Cayman being somewhat dumpy looking (and I was a happy owner of a couple), for the first time it didn't look just okay; it looked absolutely jaw-dropping stunning, Ferrariesque.
To my eye I fear the design may have reached its pinnacle and further adaptations may prove to be different but not better. The way the XK-E Series I was perfect, and the Series II and Series III weren't bad cars, they were just inferior to the Series I.
I'd actually be happy to be wrong about that in the future -- the current 718 is a move in the wrong direction IMO, but it's still a great looking car. But a 718-based GT4 would probably be a step backwards visually to my eye. Which would save me a lot of money, and ramp up my 981 GT4 snobbery, and that's always a good pair of happenings!

Hmmm... by "afterthought" do you mean "speculation?" Cuz none of the material I've seen linked in the GT4 forum has even been able to definitively confirm 4.0 NA vs. Turbo, much less availability of PDK.

I also dislike like the visual direction of the 718, compared to the flawless 981. Especially the terribly nondescript clunky/boxy front bumper and fussy rear. So the 981 GT4 can and imo likely will remain the more organic and attractive GT Cayman.

There are plenty of cars that are homologated for this class including the R8, Vantage, M3, M4, Camaro, Mustang GT350R, Evora, Massa GT, McLaren 570 etc
The point being the next version will step up the game and thus may have an impact on the price of previous versions, especially those built in the 3rd gear failure window.

What build time frame are those with 3rd gear failure? I’m in the market for a GT4 myself recently. There seem to be quite many selections on the current market.

Please note there are many more than on this list.

As to power, yes, the GT4 needs to be made competitive. Everyone keeps quoting Preuninger's statement that the next GT4 will be NA. But I can go back and quote you an earlier magazine article from 2013 where AP actually takes a nearly mocking tone with GT customers who are whining about PDK-only GT3s, telling them all the reasons the 6M is gone forever in GT cars and all the reasons this is a good thing. Meaning, just because he said it doesn't mean I believe him.
We'll see. I still suspect there's a very good chance the 982 GT4 street car will be some version of the 4.0 NA motor paired with only the 6M. This would still allow the PDK in the race car, and still cause all GT4s to be manual. Which would allow Porsche to say to PDK aspirants, "Oh, you want the FAST GT car. Kindly step over here to the other side of the showroom."

Oh, I assumed you knew that the current 981 GT4 Club Sport only comes with PDK+, while 981 GT4 only comes with 6M. That discrepancy is not a problem in GT4 racing.
