Just an update to this, i now have full access to the wiring diagram for the mirror and it looks like the LIN Bus connection is a shared connection with the roof console before travelling back to the rear BCM. Therefore I cant see why tapping into this would work. I will try and get it wired shortly and let you know how I go.

I ordered a new 718 without auto-dimming mirrors. So I'm wondering if I could add them later on....

Apologies for reviving this old thread. But I’ve been looking at the same problem and I was wondering if anybody has figured out how to make this work since then.
I’ve been looking at buying the dimming mirror with the three wires, but if we can’t get the functionality to work with the LIN wire, then it’s probably not worth for me to try.
any updates from any of the experts?

(Why anyone wouldn’t select this option at time of configuration is beyond my understanding but such people sure do create a problem for second-hand buyers who are accustomed to this feature as standard in almost all luxury cars.)

It having a LIN (communication) line means the mirror has a lower level logic ECU that needs to communicate with another ECU. That means ithe high level ECU will likely need coding if the rest of the electronics are present.

I just wrote a DIY on this. It is for a Cayenne. The brown wire is ground the middle wire goes to the canbus wire at the rear BCM. The last one goes to the drivers side fuse box. I’m not sure if it will be the same pins to tap into but here is my write up. It does require dealer programming
