Default Window Tint Inspection Drama

While this is not specific to 991s or even Porsche, the peril remains for all - at least in New York state.

I recently purchased a CPO C2S in New Jersey which included 70% tint on all windows except windshield. Last week I was told by NY inspection shop that it would not pass due to the tint. Apparently all shops have been issued a gizmo that they are required to apply to any tint to verify tint percentage does not exceed 30% . (At least my shop did me a solid by advising me prior, otherwise I would have failed and be recorded on my 'permanent record.')

NJ tells me there has always been a 'wink and nod' for the tint, but NYS is coming down hard after shootings with cops and dark tint windows in NYC.

Dealer advises they will remove the tint for me, but I am not enthused about a 3 hour round trip, plus time to remove.

Upon further research with DMV, if I get a 'note from my mother' ie. if my doctor will certify in writing that my skin is extremely photo sensitive, I can get a waiver for the tint.

Has anyone else dealt with this?

Slip the inspector a Benny?

I doubt you'll find a doctor willing to lie on a document.

Good luck.

I am in NYC as well with 20% (darker than yours). Take a road trip "upstate" - I had success at a Mavis tire shop near Hudson - smaller towns are much more likely to let you pass. Also, I am quite sure my dermatologist would give me a note if I asked (just never thought about it).

You can thank Comrade Cuomo our Governor in The Peoples Repuplik of New Yorkski for this unnecessary BS. If you can get to Nassau LI I can tell you a place to get an inspection done. Very well Known Porsche Indie. PM me. He did my inspection with over 70% and passed me. I cannot wait to leave this communist/socialist state, and take my tax dollars with me.

LOL, I live in Nassau County, had the same experience with my car. Leaving here as soon as I retire.

Trading in the '09 C2S Friday for a new 991.2 , base, manual, 20' RS Spyder rims, sport exhaust. I'll miss the old girl, but time to move on.

Was asked at one point not to inject politics - and thus I'll do my best to respond to this in the least political way.

To those that would ask "What's the need to go so dark" - I answer "Because I want it darker in my car - and its none of your business why".

I don't say that to be rude - but in the summer when we have blasts of 90 to 100F heat - and a bright sun - it's nicer to have a darker cooler interior.

I am 100% supportive of the police - but for the same reason a law abiding citizen should not be lobbed into the same category as a thug with a gun - a vehicle owner wishing for a darker tint should not be lobbed into the same category as someone wishing to hide from the police and be invisible as he preps to take a shot.

I hope I don't come across condescending as that was not my intention. The poster above who referred to our governor as comrade is 100% on point. So is our Mayor who literally IS a communist who honeymooned in communist cuba.

Our streets are now ALL filled with cameras and the speed limit has been reduced to 20 to 25 mph in MOST streets. They also time the lights to the speed issued so that you physically CAN"T go anywhere. When the light turns green - at 25 mph - by the time you get down the block to the next light - it has turned red. If you speed to make the light - you're fined. If you go through the light, you're fined.

They might as well make it 10mph - there's no difference. You can't go anywhere. Flatbush Avenue. Gerritesn Avenue. Coney Island Avenue. These are big important hub roads - and they are all infected with revenue raising cameras and purposely timed lights.

Now if you want a tint - fined.

What's next?

Well said Bradley. And I will add, to those who are naïve and think this was about the police seeing in you vehicle. Ahh NO.This was about NYS making money from fines and summonses any way they can. Don't believe me? Then why does this only apply to "passenger cars". Don't the police have to see into trucks and Limos? And you also can apply for and exemption for you passenger car with a doctor's note. No make no mistake this was about money from this greedy Governor who wish's to balance the budget on the backs of working people.

You should.

But NYC has made it impossible to get somewhere in a reasonable amount of time. As explained above - A long avenue with lets say 10 lights that are 1000 feet apart. You are forced to drive the 1000 feet 25 miles per hour. The light is then timed to turn red by the time you get there. You literally drive 1 minute. Stop for 3. Drive 1 minute. Stop for 3.

Deviation from this earns you a $50 ticket in the mail.

On top of the horrible traffic we already have everywhere else.

^^ So he can promise free stuff to people in order to vote for him to stay in power.

It's really the biggest scam. Municipalities and local governments (Ok... and the federal government too) is one big Ponzi Scheme.

You don't have to lie per earlier comments.

Just go to your optometrist and tell them that you have tint to help alleviate glare on your commute and the inspection place said you need a note. Easy Peasy.

In NY, only 3 conditions qualify one to get an exemption.

Porphyria, Xeroderma Pigmentosa, and Severe Drug Photo-Sensitivity

A simple doctor's note saying that you are bothered by glare won't cut it in NY unfortunately.

I'll tell you what's next. He's been crowing about the Tappen Zee Bridge being completed (half of it) under budget, even though it's not 100% complete. What he's hiding, as a typical Liberal spender, is he wants to DOUBLE the toll. What a great way to help the low and middle income working person who will now need top pay $20 daily, to go back & forth to work. Great job Andrew!!!!

This!

When not in my 991 I am often on my bike. Sorry, but you are not "special" and entitled to drive like an A-hole. That includes front and side tints. Even if your super-hero vision is not reduced, especially at night, other road users--like me--need to see you. Best procedures for bike riders at intersections include making eye contact with drivers. Save your side window tint for show cars.
