About the only positive thing I have ever seen done in NJ in my lifetime was the removal of all red light cameras after a three year trial period. Studies concluded that they cause more accidents.
As for the tint, I would be very nervous having it on my car in NY or NYC. I put myself in the police offer's shoes as he is approaching a car and can't see inside. Seems to be a recipe to get yourself shot due to overreaction. When I get stopped, I want LE to see my hands on top of the steering wheel. Believe me, it is appreciated by them.
It would be nice if they allowed just a tiny bit darker tint. Instead of 70% light transmittance, it should be 65%.
The tint below is considered an illegal tint.

Very easy here - if you do get pulled over - roll down the windows.

Even if your super-hero vision is not reduced, especially at night, other road users--like me--need to see you. Best procedures for bike riders at intersections include making eye contact with drivers. Save your side window tint for show cars.
Ditto what BKrantz says - not just when I am on my bike but also when I am driving - seeing the other driver’s face and what they are looking at (or not looking at) gives an idea of what they will do next.
Heat? – I live in New Orleans (without tint) so please don’t whine about hot cars.
Finally, I have the utmost respect for police officers and what they have to put up with. There’s probably not a single one of you who would want to do their job with people standing around filming every contentious situation.
But don’t worry. I am sure that if you show the officer who stopped you your doctors note he will have great sympathy for you and you will be on your way in no time at all.

It might be legal, but sorry, it does not make it smart. If I understand correctly, you are talking about reducing light through the side windows by 67%, about the same as many sunglasses. No matter what, this will make it harder to see things at night, and during twilight. And what you might miss seeing is that big commercial truck without lights about to run the stop sign on your left.
Unless of course your car with tinted side windows is for day time use only.
But NYC has made it impossible to get somewhere in a reasonable amount of time. As explained above - A long avenue with lets say 10 lights that are 1000 feet apart. You are forced to drive the 1000 feet 25 miles per hour. The light is then timed to turn red by the time you get there. You literally drive 1 minute. Stop for 3. Drive 1 minute. Stop for 3.
Deviation from this earns you a $50 ticket in the mail.
On top of the horrible traffic we already have everywhere else.
I guess in your case start/stop is a valuable tool.
Was asked at one point not to inject politics - and thus I'll do my best to respond to this in the least political way.
To those that would ask "What's the need to go so dark" - I answer "Because I want it darker in my car - and its none of your business why".
I don't say that to be rude - but in the summer when we have blasts of 90 to 100F heat - and a bright sun - it's nicer to have a darker cooler interior.
I am 100% supportive of the police - but for the same reason a law abiding citizen should not be lobbed into the same category as a thug with a gun - a vehicle owner wishing for a darker tint should not be lobbed into the same category as someone wishing to hide from the police and be invisible as he preps to take a shot.
I hope I don't come across condescending as that was not my intention. The poster above who referred to our governor as comrade is 100% on point. So is our Mayor who literally IS a communist who honeymooned in communist cuba.
Our streets are now ALL filled with cameras and the speed limit has been reduced to 20 to 25 mph in MOST streets. They also time the lights to the speed issued so that you physically CAN"T go anywhere. When the light turns green - at 25 mph - by the time you get down the block to the next light - it has turned red. If you speed to make the light - you're fined. If you go through the light, you're fined.
They might as well make it 10mph - there's no difference. You can't go anywhere. Flatbush Avenue. Gerritesn Avenue. Coney Island Avenue. These are big important hub roads - and they are all infected with revenue raising cameras and purposely timed lights.
Now if you want a tint - fined.

Just to state the obvious, there's a big country (and bigger world) beyond the 5 boroughs and surrounding counties, most of which is (1) less crowded and (2) less restricted. Unfortunately, some places and people are beyond hope, at least in our lifetimes. And since life is short, make the best of it.

I typically use the Crystalline CR90 on my cars so that I can allow as much light into the vehicle as possible but remove as much UV as possible. This includes the front windshield. Never had a problem.
Isn't the Tint based on how much light is let in? meaning 5% would be darkest and 70% pretty light?
Any way in NJ here you can do rears as much as you like, as long as the fronts driver/passenger are light. Makes sense though. Cops need to be able to see inside. But my previous installer told me he does 2-3 Windshields a day to dark and lot of them are cops doing it on their personal cars. go figure.
Any way I plan on doing a very light tint which would not be noticeable at all like 65% (light in, 35% darK) or so. The only reason to do it is UV A/B protection not to hide the beautiful interior.
Amount of light doesn't cause damage its the UV thats the problem. It doesn't matter what tint you have, all films(same brand) provide equal UV protection. Level of darkness is for looks only.
